Volunteering vs work

More and more work is offered and fulfilled as volunteer work. Is this a good sign? With large numbers of unemployed looking for a job being pushed to take whatever comes their way, I wonder.

I occasionally volunteer and in Australia I have volunteered to do volunteer work for which others are paid. Then did I take a job? Yes and No: I got paid in a place to sleep and eat. They didn’t have money to pay because they were rebuilding the lodge.

Nowadays I see positions as a bus driver that are filled as volunteers. These are often lines that are not profitable and would otherwise not be driven, but still a job that someone could fill, because they are normal hours that are run on the bus.

If we even offer those jobs as volunteer work, it might be time to separate money and job. Everyone a basic income and then become all volunteers. Enough voluntary work for everyone and very diverse. I would do it like this! I see very nice voluntary work, but yes I often have to earn my living during those hours.
