Market the attention trigger

When I go somewhere I always find out when there is a market. I love to browse markets. The market gives you a sense of life and gives you a little insight into the city and its people.

You have scant markets with only fruit, fish and cheese stalls and you have large markets such as Arnhem, Amsterdam and Utrecht where you can spend hours looking around.

You have weekly markets or what I call yuppies markets which are markets with food and handmade items. These are usually expensive markets, but fun to browse. Both types of markets attract different types of people. The weekly market people come for the daily groceries and at the yuppies markets people come as a day out. The yuppies markets often also have music and eateries where you can sit by a fire in winter.

Abroad, I usually buy fruit and snacks from the market to taste. At the larger farmers’ markets abroad you will often also find live animals that are negotiated. This is a very nice spectacle to watch those negotiations. In addition, in the South American markets people also walk in traditional clothing from the surrounding villages. You look your eyes out. Sometimes you are lucky and a local or a maternity seller wants to explain to you which costumes come from which village. Insiders information to feast on.

Unfortunately, the weekly market in Eindhoven is less exciting. A few vegetables, fruit, nuts, fabrics, fish and cheese stalls and then you’ve had it. The six months that I lived in Arnhem, I was spoiled with the big market practically at my door with everything and everything. That was worth a weekly outing.

I can’t wait for my next market abroad!

Noise everywhere

I am waiting for the bus at the bus station of Utrecht Central. I get on the bus and it drives away. As we leave the station, I notice it gets quieter. Sitting at the station you are not aware of the decibels that are produced there, but if you leave it. There is noise everywhere, strange or not?

The whole world is full of noise: The murmur on the train of everyone who seems to be talking to each other at the same time. The noise in the morning announcing that the elevator is arriving in my apartment building. How loud that ping sounds in the otherwise quiet morning. But the most annoying sound is the sound that announces that the doors of the bus in Eindhoven will close. Is that possible at a lower decibel?

Listening to the sound, I think about noise that I had to get used to. I arrive in Denpasar, Bali. Every time you walk out of your hotel you have to get used to the street noises and especially the motorbikes and the honking. I compare all those sounds in my head and still arrive at the sound that announces that the doors of the bus in Eindhoven will close as the most annoying noise. It hurts your ears.

But actually I long for silence, not the silence of my loft, but the silence that you encounter while traveling in nature. I am again on the Camino de Santiago on nature pieces and on the deserted beaches of Australia and New Zealand. Oops, I’m traveling again in my head! This time looking for silence…. But Chile is a bit higher on the schedule to put the desert there and Patagonia must be wonderfully quiet. Book now?

Culture shock

Then there is the introduction to culture shock! Not so pleasant, but it makes you think! While traveling I have never suffered from culture shock. Then the differences in culture are “adorable”, because it is equally fun to see and experience.

I have moved to Eindhoven since the end of March. Although the people from Brabant are very hospitable, living here is different from living in Utrecht. I miss the directness and curiosity of your environment for everything new in the neighborhood. In Eindhoven they first look at the cat from the tree before they ask you what you will do in Eindhoven?

This is not my first culture shock, but my second noteworthy one. On my 10th we went back to live in Curaçao. Where I had lived until I was 7. 3,5 years The Netherlands had Dutch. It starts with:

  • I spoke and speak Papiamento with an accent
  • After attending a small school where a class of groups 6,7 and 8 together had 18 children to a class with 35 children!
  • The sun was shining daily and it was warm!
  • The letters were written differently. I can still suggest changing the writing style why I write ugly?
  • They recited poems and there was a real competition that started in the class in which everyone was obliged to participate until the theater of Curaçao.
  • The schools started early at 7:15 already!

Now thinking carefully, I think that the cultural difference was greater than now! But I still miss the Randstad! Maybe just move back?

The cadence of the center of Utrecht

The stairs for the town hall are a well-known gathering place in Utrecht. Usually with sun and free music. Which provides entertainment and liveliness at this place.

Even more entertaining at this place is the interaction of the promotion teams / sales team and the city visitors. The city visitor who does not feel like a conversation and promotion team looking for victims. Both play a leading role in dance with the aim of getting around each other or meeting each other.

If the promotion team wins then you see the city visitor listening to the promotion talk and thinking how fast can I flee, while the promotion team finally has someone and thinks let me take the time.

Sometimes the city visitor wins then the dance is even better, because the promotion team does not give up and goes in pursuit or involves a new victim in the dance. This is the dance of infinity supported by steps, words, gestures and a smile. A dance that continues in its own rhythm with highs and lows until closing time.

Working from everywhere

I don’t have an office. My office is my laptop, my mobile phone and the cloud (for storage of my files). So even in Holland I am free to work from everywhere. And I do that also a lot. Sometimes I go to Amsterdam, Rotterdam or other city just to work from there and most of the time I combine that with being a tourist in my own country by visiting something or taking a tour.

In Utrecht my favorite places to work from are:

On the road I develop my own favorite places, most of the time this is:

  • My hotel/hostel room
  • Lobby of the hotel/hostel
  • Small cafes
  • Parks
  • Co-working spaces

Challenges

With this lifestyle there are a few challenges to overcome:

  • I myself struggled with staying grounded, so I decided to keep a room in Holland where I can always return to, to call home.
  • Other issues nomads struggle with are that in order to have health insurance, have your company subscribed to a country. You have to have an address, except if you live in Estonia. There they have e-citizenship. Later on in the summer Eunice Frijde and I will be making short movies about why the Netherland should also introduce e-citizenship. You can also help by signing this petition.
  • Another thing that can be difficult, but don’t have to be is maintaining long distance relationships with friends, family and lovers. If people are not familiar with internet or don’t like it, it will be difficult to keep contact. Both party have to be willing to put the effort to keep this relationships sane.
  • If instead of having your own company, you work in contract for others it can be difficult to obtain a working visa in some countries.

The future

With more and more people not getting that lifetime contract and the pension being more and more a myth. More and more people will be starting to work location independent or at least work from contract to contract even if that is in the same town. So we should be working on the rules of countries to accommodate this lifestyle.

What else?

There is going to be a first ever international conference for Digital Nomads (DNX) in Berlin, 1 august 2015. Also there is a cruise ship leaving from Gran Canaria to Brazil full of digital nomads going on a digital detox (because of the prices of internet on board ). It’s a cool cruise and cheap. So if you are interested to know more about the lifestyle you can join them or connect with me. I am more the willing to tell you more about my lifestyle.

And to answer the question in the title I call myself a data nomad, because I travel a lot, even in Holland I travel a lot and I work from project to project on data-analysis, data-cleaning, data-visualization and WordPress website. So even my work is nomadic and I love that, being able to work with different people and different project all year round.

Self-Employed in Utrecht – Guiselaine Capella “combine business with traveling around the world is my dream”

This article was published in Dutch in the Dutch online newspaper DUIC.

Utrecht has over 21,000 freelancers. Special colorful independent professionals, each with its own story. In the coming weeks you’ll find every Wednesday a portrait of a self-employed professional in Utrecht DUIC. Today the story of Guiselaine Capella ButterflyEffect and Databeet. This is the first episode of Laura Stassen, the new editor of this ZZP series.

“I am a location independent entrepreneur. Over the past five months I have traveled around Asia. In 2012 I started my company Databeet. Under this label I’m doing data analysis, I teach Excel and coach (PhD) students in the use of the computer program SPSS (This is a statistical analysis program). Last year I started beside Databeet ButterflyEffect. Under this label I make WordPress sites and I set up Google Analytics and Hootsuite for people. I also coach people in learning daily digital things that they can adapt in WordPress, Google Analytics and Hootsuite themself. ”

“I wander around the world and work anywhere and everywhere. Both inside and outside the Netherlands. Over the past five months, the region around the Pacific Ocean in Asia was my workplace. I have traveled through Singapore, Australia, Bali, New Zealand and Hong Kong. From there I had Skype contact with my customers in the Netherlands. So I worked from locations such as the library, cafes and beach bars. ”

“Freedom I find very important. The ability to work where you want and take the jobs that interest you. I also like the fact that you’re building something from beginning to end. You can see where there is room for improvement and change it right away. “”My favorite job was teaching in Buurthuis Rosa in Lombok, Utrecht. Especially the course “Starting with computer” I really liked teaching that. I had a student who didn’t like computers at all at the beginning. At the end of the six classes the student was proud to tell me that she had sent me a email. At that moment my heart leaps for joy and I am as happy as they are. ”

“My favorite working place is outside in the garden or in nature. Nothing is better than working, and  hearing the birds and to be around nature to me. Unfortunately working from such places is not always possible because of the weather in the Netherlands. That’s why I often work in the Netherlands, in places such as the library, Seats2meet and home. Despite the fact that I like to travel the world, I call Utrecht my city. Once I’m in Utrecht I feel at home, till the travel bug hits again. “”My dream is to live so that I can combine traveling the world and enjoying life with entrepreneurship. I do this for example by my collaboration with Loginc and offering swapping for example with De leefstijlspecialist, so that people without money can also use my services by exchange instead of money.”

Guiselaine Capella Edited by Laura Stassen. Do you also want to feature in this series? Please contact redactie@duic.nl!

Building life is like building a city after a disaster

On my 5-month journey as a digital nomad in Southeast Asia and mainly Australia and New Zealand, one place touched me the most that was Christchurch. It touched my sense of sadness and hope.

My first look at Christchurch was after a breathtaking ride with TransAlpine from Greymounth through the New Zealand Alps to Christchurch. One beautiful after the other beautiful comes by. Your senses are spoiled with all the beautiful things and then you are suddenly in Christchurch. A city with literally empty spaces now (2014) still after the earthquake of 2011. How greater can the contrast and shock be on your senses?

As a urban geographer I was immediately fascinated and I immediately wondered why after 3 years (was 2014 when I was there) the city has not been cleared up and reconstruction was not in full swing? Why is the city so empty? And by empty I mean literally it was a city of 380,000 people before the earthquake (comparable in size to Utrecht), but many people have left so the city feels empty.

Surprise

I fell from surprise to surprise. I love to get up early in a new city and then wander around the center looking for a place to have breakfast, but mostly to see and feel how commuters and rush hour work, I have seen this before New York, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Wellington done to name a few. I always look with surprise and interest at the phenomenon of rush hour. The streams of people, all in a different direction with almost collisions. Small detail that almost causes collisions by me, because I look fascinated at how the rush hour process looks like conveyor belt work in a factory.

But in Christchurch it was different. I was one of the only ones in the morning around rush hour on the street along with a stray commuter and wanderers. No busy traffic, no opening stores and employees on their way to work. What I did find densely carpeted shops, half buildings and buildings that were renovated. It was like a ghost town!

This made me even more fascinated by the city and went to investigate to find out more about the reconstruction of the city.

Hope

In the reconstruction I found hope, but also frustration. Historical buildings about which it was staggered whether they should be demolished or preserved. There was even a real action center in a newly built shopping center where protests were made for the preservation of historic buildings and people were helped in their lawsuit about rebuilding their home or claiming compensation.

Can you imagine after 3 years people were still not allowed in their house, danger of collapse. But there was also no compensation due to delays and haggling with insurers, which prevented them from continuing. I wanted to know more about this, so I went to the museum to look specifically at the earthquake and the consequences of the Quakebox movie (the website is not working optimally). Not really a film, but a collection of short stories of survivors about how they experienced the earthquake and the moment after. So far, the Quakebox consists of more than 700 stories. I had to shed some tears and looking around me I was not the only one. I thought it was nice that the museum gave place to the mourning of the inhabitants of the city, but the museum was not the only place.

But the museum wasn’t the only thing there was. Everywhere in the city there were monuments to commemorate and give people space for their feelings. Some made for the government and others made spontaneously by the residents of the city. Such as a small park in the center where benches, plants and a vegetable garden were set up. Residents come to work on the vegetable garden, talk to each other and make music.

I became fascinated by Christchurch experience and wondered if this also happens in the same way after a disaster in other disaster areas / cities. In New York I had not experienced that in the 9/11 area.

At least the city of Christchurch grabbed me. Perhaps also because I understood the struggle of the city in search of hope and reconstruction after a disaster / misfortune.
