The best plugins for 2020

Plugin

If you build a website in WordPress you need plugins to support that website. Plugins are small parts of a website that gives the website an extra function than only the theme would do. I recommend the following 10 free plugins for your website:

404page – your smart custom 404 error page

With this plugin you can create a page where your website visitors come if they visit a non-existent page of your website. This is useful if you have deleted a few pages or have changed the names of your pages. With this plugin they get a page that you have created instead of an error message. On this page you can tell them that this page no longer exists, but that they can go to other pages on your website. My 404 page looks like this: https://wanderingguiselaine.nl/not-found/

Akismet Anti-Spam

With the Aksimet plugin you can stop spam on your blog. There are people who release robots on the web and they spend all day watching where they can bother people. Without this spam plugin your blog would be full of comments that don’t make any sense and that you can’t do anything with.

Bol.com partner plugin for WordPress

With this plugin you can earn a little money. It goes like this. You install the plugin and you can add books to every blog or page. If someone clicks on one of those books and buys a book at bol.com, you will receive a small commission. That person pays no more than the normal price. Beware you may not buy books yourself via this link from Bol.com unfortunately. Help me earn it and buy a book at bol.com through me 🙂 .

Broken Link Checker

With this plugin you make your life a lot easier. This plugin checks whether there are links on your website that do not work and report this to you via mail and in the menu. You can check and adjust those links if necessary or deactivate them. This way you will never have links on your website that are not current and that no longer work. This is checked every 72 hours on my website.

Classic Editor

Since WordPress 5.0 there are major changes to the appearance of WordPress behind the scenes, if you don’t want that yet, you can install this plugin and your WordPress will look just like before 5.0. This seems to be possible for a number of years and WordPress really wants to switch to the new one. Handy if you don’t have time to learn the new WordPress.

Contact Form 7

In addition to e-mail, you often want to be reachable in another way on your website. This is possible with a contact form. With this plugin you can place the contact form where you want on your website. You can also create different types of contact forms.

Cookie Consent

There is new legislation in the field of data retention of visitors to your website. You are at least required to inform your website visitors and give them a chance not to agree with your cookies. Cookies are small parts that you leave on the computer of the other person to collect data such as where from someone visits your website, etc. With this plugin you meet the minimum requirements.

Limit Login Attempts

We have already mentioned robots that leave comments on your website. This time it is about bots who want to break into your website. With this plugin you make it more difficult as they can only try to log in a limited number of times.

Social Media and Share Icons (Ultimate Social Media)

With this plugin you ensure that there are buttons with a link to your Social Media channels and that people can easily share your blogs via Social Media. The free version has many options. Take your time to set it up properly and this will give you the best results.

Yoast SEO

Everyone wants to be found well by their customers and Google. For this there is a plugin that can help you, namely Yoast. If you install this plugin you can design your snippets yourself. Snippets are small summaries that can be seen in Google. You can also enter a keyword. Furthermore, this plugin tells you if your snippet, keyword and structure of your story is good. Do not stare blindly at a green light, make sure the story remains legible.

These are the basic plugins. You can install even more plugins depending on your website and its function. And as a bonus, I recommend that you install a Google Analytics plugin so that you can see statistics for your website. With things like how many visitors you have, which page is visited the most and how long someone stays on a certain page, etc.

Take advantage of these plugins and start with your website. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Update your plugins

To keep your WordPress site safe, it is essential that you update the plugins used in your website. Updating will prevent your website from being hacked. That does not mean that it can never be hacked, but it reduces the chance of being hacked.

Where are the plugins?

Go down the dashboard in the menu and you’ll see plugins somewhere half way on the page. Click on installed plugins to get an overview of all the plugins that you or the builder of your website have installed.

Plugins

In the overview that appears you will see all plugins that have been installed. You also see that I have 13 active plugins and that none has to be updated. If there is an update you will see a number behind plugins. Click on update available to get an overview of the plugins you can update. Click on the update below the plugin to update the plugin that needs to be updated.

When the update is completed, you will see a green checkmark and you will now no longer see an orange circle with a number at plugins. This means that all plugins have been updated and you have finished updating.

Do this at least once a week!

What is WordPress

What is WordPress

WordPress is a system to manage your website, blog or even webshop without having to know HTML or PHP

Originally, WordPress is a free weblog software. It is currently the most used content management system (I explain later). It uses the PHP programming language. All files are stored in a MySQL database (I explain this later). WordPress is open source, which means that you can download it for free and work with it to customize it.

CMS

Because WordPress is a content management system (CMS), the user can easily make changes to the website without technical knowledge. The user writes in plain language what should be on the website and the CMS translates this into HTML code. So the system writes the HTML code for you. A CMS is a software application (web application) that enables people to publish data and documents on the Internet without much technical knowledge. A CMS consists of:

  • Administrative module in which data can be entered, modified or deleted.
  • A database for storing data.
  • A presentation module, the actual website where the visitor sees the data.

MySQL database

MySQL database is a kind of rack cabinet where you have different courses (tables). In these tables you can place things, such as pages. When you add a page, message, category, tag or anything else in WordPress it is stored in a table. On your website, at the front, it is then retrieved from the database and displayed on your website. Without MySQL database you do not have WordPress.

WordPress.com

In addition to WordPress that runs on a server, it is your own or a rented via hosting package. Host WordPress also WordPress on their own system under WordPress.com. This free version is limited, but suitable for small blog or website. With WordPress.com it is not possible to use self-made themes and plugins. This is possible on a private server.

Functions

WordPress has a number of functions:

  • Templates are the design and appearance of your website.
  • Plugins, small pieces of software that you add to your website to make a contact form, for example.
  • Widgets are small modules that you can add to the website by dragging. For example, a search bar, a blogarchief, etc.

Plugin, what is that?

Plugin

A WordPress site consists of:

  • The CMS system WordPress.
  • Themes: the design of your website.
  • Plugins: later more about this.
  • Widgets: similar to apps on your mobile, additions to your website.

What are plugins?

Pieces of software, written for WordPress and developed by third parties that you add to your website making it possible to add something to your website, for example a contact form.

Are plugins safe?

Plugins are a piece of software, so they can also contain vulnerabilities and vulnerabilities. There are a number of ways you can safely use plugins in your WordPress site, namely:

  • Before you install a plugin, read carefully what it does and other people’s experiences with it.
  • Choose especially plugins with 4 or more stars.
  • Choose plugins that are updated / maintained by the creator.
  • Update your plugins as soon as there is a new update.
  • If you still find a bad plugin, turn it off and delete it from your website.

Sometimes a plugin does not coincide with your theme or other plugin then you have to switch off the plugin and find another plugin to prevent problems on your website.

How do you find the right plugin?

Consider in advance what you want the plugin to do. Then search on keywords for a suitable plugin. Often you get a list of plugins that make contact forms for example. Look especially at the plugins with 4 or 5 stars. Read the description and the experiences of others with the plugin. Then install it and test if it goes well with your theme and other plugins.

Tip: With each plugin you install, you should consider whether you really need it on your website.
