Friends in the now

Traveling a lot, makes most contacts short and volatile. But still a click is important to me in these contacts.

In some places you have the click with the people and/or the place. And in others not. And that’s ok! Especially for an introvert who doesn’t mind spending time alone.

But when you meet that someone with that special click, it’s fun to do some things together. Go explore your surroundings together.

And sometimes those contacts turn into a friendship after spending time together. But that is mostly rare and that’s ok too. Because the now moment of having fun together is what counts and nothing else. Friends in the now!

My first introduction to a retreat

As I told in the hunger knock blog I went on retreat in Rio Largatos, Yucatan, Mexico for the necessary reflection and relaxation. A bit of yoga and meditation that I can handle and nice to experience a fire ceremony. Probably the same as a campfire with meditation, right?

We had a Coco at the start of the weekend that we had to name and represented our blockages and we had to drag it to everywhere we went. Yes, everywhere you went you walked with a Coco in your hand!

I named my Coco Coco Loco and stood for letting go of the past and future to live in the now. Ok nobody knows me in this village so walking around with Coco that will work out if that is the strangest thing this weekend. I will be fine.

We were also told that during the fire ceremony we were going to throw the Coco into the fire as a symbol for letting go. No problem, please!

After a delicious shrimps meal, fishing village, so tastier and fresher you can’t get. We went by boat to a deserted beach. Sky full of stars, blowing wind, sound of splashing water and an occasional boat. The fire was lit while we watched the stars.

When the fire was ready we were called to stand in semicircle around the fire with the Cocos in front of us. As an introvert, I had prepared myselve to share something small about the blockages. So check I was ready! Yes?

We were going to participate in the entire fire ceremony with invocation of the elements, ancestors, earth and the four wind directions and the sky. OK, I had not prepared myself for that. Everyone in turn seemed to know how to do that and what to say. whole verses were chanted. It made me more and more nervous and I panicked a bit. THINK, THINK! Did they come up with those verses on the spot or had they prepared in advance? How stupid I was not to read about what a fire ceremony represents! The introverted mind that just doesn’t like living in action!

My turn: Thanks West, ohm!

Living your dreams!

Lucky me

Some people are meant to be in your life. You share a passion for something with them. They make you think about things, wonder about things, laugh and take up challenges in your life. I am lucky to have a few of these people in my life. One of them is Claudia, we met in January 2013 on our travels in Cuba. We discovered we share a passion for travel and are both introverts. After Cuba we kept in touch inspiring each other with our travels on opposite side of the world.

Europe

Once back in Europe the opportunity came to meet again. Claudia doing a travel design course in Rome, Italy. Me a digital nomad who can work from everywhere saw an opportunity to see Rome through the eyes of an Italian Islander. So we settled on a date and of I went to Rome. We had a wonderful time me exploring the city by myself when Claudia had classes and in the afternoon with Claudia as a private guide ;-)! How cool is that?

Taking up your dream!

Of course we talked about travels and the travel design course Claudia was doing. But the nice thing is that after the course she is going to Latin America to be a tour leader! I am happy for her, but a bit jealous that she is going to skip another European winter to travel. She is going even further with her dream in the future she is going to be a travel consultant! She has a successful blog about Latin America and Sardinia. Talking to her about her plans and being in Rome, got me inspired and started dreaming again of my life as a digital nomad and making new travel plans. For now I will settle for following Claudia’s adventures on her blog and digitally, but not for long. Because we will meet again in Latin America , Sardinia, Netherlands, Curaçao or any other part of the world.

Reading is not relaxing

Bali Amed

Bali in one word relaxing. Totally different from western world, but sometimes it can also be frustrating. I mostly went to Bali to relax and take a break from Australia which was really getting to me. I found this in Bali … most of the time.

The beach was relaxing, walking in the rice fields was. Even being talked to all the time was ok. But a few things got to me and got me totally frustrated. Before I dulge into this I must say these things frustrated me because of my character and others mind like it. And I had a really wonderful time there and would visit again to relax, maybe than these things wouldn’t get to me anymore.

It seems that everybody wants to sell something to you. You are the walking cash machine. Of course we may have in general more means then people living there, but this doesn’t give people permission to try to milk you or get angry at you for not going into their shop.

Another thing that got to me is. That as people see you reading they think you should relax. And relax means in Bali doing nothing or talk to each other. Remember, as I told you before I am an extreme introvert, who enjoys talking to others, but in small doses. But in Bali there is no small doses, one after the other wants to talk to you. And me being nice I answer them all, but then at the end of the day I am exhausted and fled to my room to read in quiet peace. :-D

Coping with introversion & the need for loneness time

Hey Claudia, remember we started this blog with introducing ourselves as introverts? I think it’s time to blog about a challenge for me as an introvert.

Lone bird

I like talking to people and getting to know their background and knowing about their country, interacting with fellow travelers, wwoofers, workers, etc. But I also have a huge need for quietness and being by myself. The introvert in me has to rest and refuel her energy. Otherwise there are big health consequences for me! And that is hard when you are wwoofing, because some way I end up choosing all the time places which want to interact all the time after work. I just want to enjoy some reading, some computer time, some thinking and some time alone. What’s up with people wanting to interact all the time?

Guiselaine

I guess its hostel time to get some ME time and getting healthy! Some beach walk, urban walk, bush walk. And work on my business without people asking all the time are you working when I am skyping with friends or sitting behind my computer. Isn’t spare time supposed to be time you do whatever you want without people mingling?
