7 Tips to save on groceries

Groceries always come out more expensive than you had in mind and then you also forget some ingredients and you have to go back and take too much with you. Do you recognize this? Then these tips are also useful for you.

Make a weekly menu

By deciding in advance what you will eat, you only get the products that are needed for your meals that week in the supermarket. You no longer have to decide in the store what to eat and then take things with you for more than you can eat in a week. You can save even more by connecting the menus during the week, so that you can use ingredients that are left over from one meal into another one.

Create a shopping list

Having a shopping list and sticking to it keeps you in control of spending on groceries. Also take a look at what you already have at home and do not put it on your shopping list. Don’t be tempted to buy other things that aren’t on your list. Put some tasty things on your list so you don’t have to feel tempted in the store to buy something that is not on your list. Once caught something that is not on your list then you think oh that is also possible.

Shop for groceries once a week

The less you are in the supermarket, the less tempted you are to buy more. Pick a day and go with your list and buy everything you need.

Leave A-brands

Leave the A-brands and choose a good alternative house brand if you can. Saves a lot of money. A-brands are often at eye level, but if you look down or up, you see the house brands and they are often just as good. Sometimes they even come from the same factory.

Do not go shopping with an empty stomach or children

If you are hungry, you can buy everything that you like at the moment, because your stomach tells you that you need it. You don’t need them at all. Eat something and then go shopping and leave your children at home, because they often want something and that is not on your shopping list, so you spend more money than budgeted.

Eat leftovers

If you have food left over, you can easily eat it another day, so keep it. It is nice for lunch or sometimes you can freeze it. So storing leftovers doesn’t have to mean eating the same food for three days.

What amount to budget for groceries

If you have no idea how big you should budget for food, NIBUD has guidelines you can try out to see what your shopping budget will be. I took there guidlines and put my groceries budget at 49 euros a week including small groceries as a bottle of water and lunch out.

1 percent gross turnover to the Food Bank

1 percent turnover to the Food Bank

This year I want to donate 1 percent of my turnover to charities chosen by me. I am fascinated by PayItForward system and think it is something super! Every now and then someone does something unexpected beautiful for me and I want to give this back. This time I do this by giving 1 percent of my gross turnover to a good cause, namely the Food Bank. In the first quarter, 1 percent goes to the Food Bank.

Food Bank

The Food Bank is really a PayItForward to me. It was a charity far from my bed show until February 2017. By living anti-squat I ended up without a home after six months and a small debt of about 2500 euros. Due to illness it was also quiet around the income.

At the end of February I pick up work again and I found a house in Eindhoven. I don’t like debt and want to get rid of it as soon as possible. So made a deal with the debt collection company. This means that I will be off debt within six months, but have no room for groceries besides fixed costs and debt. As a result, I end up at the Food Bank and I could pick up groceries there once a week.

Pick up groceries at the Food Bank

It is very nice that it is possible. I got more than enough groceries to buy almost nothing. So saved a lot per week. The groceries are super, it consists of everything. Lots of eggs, bread and vegetables. But there is also toothpaste, coffee, tea, butter and sweets in the package. And once in a while you can get extra meat. I never did that, but it was possible.

The walk to the Food Bank

I must say that I was ashamed that I used the Food Bank and hardly told anyone. Every Friday morning at 10am I stood in line with the same people waiting to fill my bags with groceries. More groceries than I would buy per week or buy now per week.

Farewell Food Bank

In October 2017, I was able to say goodbye to the Food Bank by paying off my debt and being rich in assignments again. I was grateful to them, but also happy that I could now get my groceries myself again. I was only dependent on it for six months, but many people longer. So that’s why I transfer 1 percent of my gross turnover from January 1 to March 31, 2020 to the Food Bank. It is a small contribution compared to their other donations, but I also support them in their good work.

Learned from the Food Bank

The walk to the Food Bank was a lesson in humility, gratitude and vulnerability:

  • Humility, because you get so much and don’t have to do anything for it.
  • Gratitude I was able to pay off my debt very quickly.
  • And vulnerability, because no matter how big your buffer is, with some major setbacks and illness you can get through it and then….
