Leaving 2019 behind and starting 2020

2019 was over before I could blink. I hope 2020 last longer. What happend in 2019? And what am I looking forward to in 2020?

Winning 5.000 euro for Stichting Verloren Jaren

I am on the board of NGO Verloren Jaren (Lost Years). With this NGO we won 5.000 euro for the things we are doing with peersupport and working on combatting Stigma.

From 3 websites to 1 website

I had 3 website for each thing I did , but found it a hassle. So now back to one website with everything on it what I do, my blog and interviews with interesting people. You can find it on wanderingguiselaine.

Interviews with interesting people

This year I talked with a few interesting people about what they do and how they want to change the world. You can find these interviews on https://wanderingguiselaine.nl/interviews/ .

Wandelen naar Jezelf

Wandelen naar Jezelf means walking to yourself. It means getting to know yourself better by doing workshops and hikes. Last year we organized a midweek on Ameland and this year on Terschelling. The group particpated in workshops about getting to know what you want and we made 3 hikes in which we had one on one conversations about what the participants wanted with their lives, working on dreams. I organized this together with Herstelreizen.

Hiking the Pieterpad

In Spring 2019 I started hiking Pieterpad. I am on 1/4 of the route. Because of dead of my grandmother and moving I couldn’t hike more. I hope to finish the route in 2020.

4 Days Marbella Hike

In the fall I went to Marbella to hike for four days around there. It was nice to do. I walked places I would see on a normal vacation to Marbella. A look if that part of Spain is a place is I would like to setup my tiny house with a garden. No it is not THE Place, but I will keep doing other 4 Days walk of 20K in Southern Europe to find the perfect spot for my Tiny house with garden.

WordPress Conference in Berlin

At the beginning of the summer I went to Berlin for a WordPress conference. There I got to know more about the future of WordPress, blogging and SEO. It was a nice trip and I got to see a bit more of Berlin. It was my third visit to the city.

Christmas Market

Seeing a Christmas market in Germany was on my to do list. So I went to Koln in November, but it was one day too early for the Christmas market. So I have to go to another city in Germany again next year to experience the German Christmas market.

Night of the refugee

At the beginning of the summer I walked 40k through the night from Rotterdam to Den Haag for the NGO refugees. It was hard, but a nice experience. This year I will walk again 40K but then from Utrecht to Amersfoort if possible. You can support the cause.

What will 2020 bring

Next year I want:

  • To have a higher revenue. I hope to earn with my blog, writing articles, selling books, investing in crowdfunding and bonds and online courses as passive income.
  • Also I want to read 52 books 2020. I have a list of more than 300 books I want to read.
  • I would love to go on 1 workation in 2020. Last year I went on workation to Berlin and Curacao.
  • It would be fun if I could also develop furtther earning from hiking workation/vacations.
  •  Not work related wishes for 2020 are: I would love to loose 20KG, play tennis again, make a few travels and put more money a side.

Good girl

Good girl

Compared to others, I am quite a good girl. I took a puff of a cigarette in my life and thought it was so dirty that I never had to use it again like coffee.

I am also cautious with drinks since I like to keep control of my situation. Yes, a control freak who has only been tipsy and never drunk.

I don’t dare take drugs at all. I’m already psychotic of myself, let alone experimenting with resources. So I ignore that too.

I used to be too scared to look or cheat, so I didn’t do that either. And I still do my taxes well. The only thing I’m experimenting with is traveling. Give up everything to make that one journey in my life. I did, I’ll do it again.

I travel in journeys just like I do sports. Then I don’t know my limits and I do everything for that journey or that victory. Challenge yourself just to walk that meter. Canceling that house to save to be able to make that one fantastic trip.

And yes, this good girl is in trouble! Don’t stress home anymore, after that ultimate journey in an overwhelmed housing market. I always think, is it worth it? More than worth it when I think of all the trips I have made and walking tours. If I cancel my rent and then leave, I can travel as long as possible. Shall I go again?

What do you want to achieve in 5/10 years?

La vida

The question “What do you want to achieve in 5 years” is often asked during job interviews in any variant. Have I always answered this question honestly? No and yes!

No,

No of course not. In such a conversation you give the desired answer. What did I do beforehand? Viewed the website, the annual report and the puppets that work there. What do they think of their company, quite easy to get out of their communication channels. Oh yes, nowadays Social Media is also among them. Do they fall for it? Never, because what happens when you give the desired answer. They go into something else or they keep asking you how you can do that in their organization. What will they saddle you with? That you will almost describe their position as ideal instead of the position you are applying for. Oops, not the candidate that we want too much competition, we already have too much in the company.

Yes,

It is best to come up with a variant that makes you different from the previous 5 candidates they spoke with, because yes they are corny after 4 previous conversations, especially if there was already a candidate in between or totally NONE. Your chance, they will emphasize it differently and if you have prepared yourself well and they give you the chance then you can finally get to the point. Discuss the project that you have applied for. The latter is the crowbar, how well you and they can guard your limits in the conversation. At that moment it is really you against them until you are hiredYes

The e-mail, phone call a few hours after the conversation. We have 2 candidates for the next round next to you and the conversation is with 3 other colleagues of a little more caliber. The latter can be seen by the way in the function names in the e-mail they send. Is it very no, because if you are the ideal candidate, the introduction is done in 10 minutes or less and you have ended up in task description. The last 10 minutes, because we really have to get back to work. Your person who has been asked exhausted is asked what your last earned salary is. What did I come up with? I still try to provoke them, because I had thought so neatly in role-playing games in business economics. And sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t make them call the first number. And yes, they must always discuss it, because no you ask a much too high salary, even the director does not earn so much!

Next day

When can you start? We can offer you this if you can start within a month. Satisfied? Yes both sides, but yes I have been talking on both sides of the table for years and they have known that from the start. So if they are seriously interested, I will always be presented with a reel bot and that small space to ask for something more in terms of salary and benefits.

1st day

We had contact a month ago. The secretariat sends instructions as to what time I am expected and that everything is arranged. The pass is ready and I will be picked up. We have a number of discussions and together we draw the project out on paper for the division of tasks. We have lunch, a few more names pass by. The moment suprême: the computer switches on and yes my login is still in the making, no longer valid, etc. Only a proposal round?

Dreaming of a book

Shantie

As long as I know Shantie, she wanted to write a novel.
We met at E-Quality (now
Atria) were she was doing an internship and I was working as a student-assistant. Over the years we kept in contact and every time we spoke: Shantie would tell she was working on her book. She wouldn’t tell what it was going to be about, just that she was working on it.

Publishing

Last year the big news came that she found a publisher. At the beginning of this year, she told me the book was going to be published in fall. So I was very curious about the book and the minute it came out in October, I bought it to read. The book is as good as I hoped/thought it would be.

Vervoering

Sorry, Non Dutch speakers. The book is in Dutch only at the moment. It’s a pity because I think the book deserves a bigger audience dealing with an international history subject in a fiction setting. The book is called ‘Vervoering’, which means transport/rapture in English depending on how you translate it.

The story

The story tells us about four generations of Hindi people on three continents. How life was for them at that time. And how they try to accomplish their Dreams and how sometimes their Dreams and hopes are accomplished by their Children in their own way. We learn about the hardship of each generation with their own struggles. A must read!!

Dreaming

I am so happy for Shantie that she accomplished one of her dreams of writing a novel. It’s such an inspiration to keep on dreaming and trying to accomplish your own Dreams!

Living your dreams!

Lucky me

Some people are meant to be in your life. You share a passion for something with them. They make you think about things, wonder about things, laugh and take up challenges in your life. I am lucky to have a few of these people in my life. One of them is Claudia, we met in January 2013 on our travels in Cuba. We discovered we share a passion for travel and are both introverts. After Cuba we kept in touch inspiring each other with our travels on opposite side of the world.

Europe

Once back in Europe the opportunity came to meet again. Claudia doing a travel design course in Rome, Italy. Me a digital nomad who can work from everywhere saw an opportunity to see Rome through the eyes of an Italian Islander. So we settled on a date and of I went to Rome. We had a wonderful time me exploring the city by myself when Claudia had classes and in the afternoon with Claudia as a private guide ;-)! How cool is that?

Taking up your dream!

Of course we talked about travels and the travel design course Claudia was doing. But the nice thing is that after the course she is going to Latin America to be a tour leader! I am happy for her, but a bit jealous that she is going to skip another European winter to travel. She is going even further with her dream in the future she is going to be a travel consultant! She has a successful blog about Latin America and Sardinia. Talking to her about her plans and being in Rome, got me inspired and started dreaming again of my life as a digital nomad and making new travel plans. For now I will settle for following Claudia’s adventures on her blog and digitally, but not for long. Because we will meet again in Latin America , Sardinia, Netherlands, Curaçao or any other part of the world.

Changes, changes

’If you have a dream, go for it’

Sometimes you dream and fantasize about all sorts of things, but you do not know how you can incorporate it into your life. But other times you really think; it’s been enough and book a ticket with a departure eight months later and think that that should be enough time to give yourself time to get used to the idea and sort things out. And yes some action, make sure you actually come into action! I can tell you now from experience :-). With one week to go before my departure, I know a lot more about traveling entrepreneurs than eight months ago and I also know that the life of a traveling entrepreneur is also something that fits me right at this particular moment in my life. Funny thing is that you think that something does not exist simply because you don’t know about it. But really everything in life has been done by someone. There are more people than you think that did it or are doing it. So I am not that special in what I am about to do. But everyone is doing it in her/his own way! The way that suits you best! My unique way! On the one hand it is very exciting to step into the unknown, but on the other hand it also feels super comfortable, because I’m just combining two things I like to do traveling and being an entrepreneur.

What am I about to do?

Going see the world with my laptop! First stop is in Australia with a short stopover of a few days in Singapore!

What will be the same?

I will still be doing analysis in SPSS, giving workshops and courses and building WordPress sites.

‘Follow your heart, and do what you like and not just follow the money’

What is going to be different?

I will be working from different places and learn to live life at a slower pace. You probably will see some pictures of me working on my laptop on the beach, in the park, in the forest, at a beautiful scenery, etc. Not to make you jealous, just to make sure you know everything is possible. Keep dreaming big and sometimes just try one of those dreams!

 Follow your dreams!
