7 things I would like to do in Spain

I have been to Spain before and every time I discover new things that I would like to do. That’s why I like to share the 7 things I would definitely like to do in Spain.

Visit Gibraltar

I would love to visit Gibraltar. It seems unique to me. And well it is actually a piece of Great Britain in Spain. Must be unique to be in a Mediterranean Great Britain and see Africa across the ‘street’.

Visit Seville

Visiting Seville is still missing on my list of major cities visited in Spain. I liked the other big cities in Spain so I want to see this one too. Plus the environment must be very beautiful.

Camino Ingles walk

The shortest route of the Camino routes. Yes you must have walked it. So I like to walk this piece of Camino soon. It is not a difficult route, but it seems to rain more than elsewhere in Spain.

Camino del Norte

This is one of the toughest Camino routes, but also one of the most beautiful I think. Especially the views from the rocks. A lot of climbing on the way and certainly not done without training and preferably in dry season.

Visit the Canary Islands

I have heard a lot of good things about these islands. A mother of an elementary school friend also came from Lanzarote. I was and still am curious about the islands. Who knows soon.

Visit the Balearic Islands

Another island group from Spain that has my curiosity. As an island girl I am curious about other islands. And these islands seem to have beautiful vegetation.

Live a winter in Spain

I would love to be a whole winter in the country. Preferable on the coast of Spain or the south where the weather is reasonable in the winter. I imagine Spring temperatures in the winter. What a beautiful winter it would be.

The feet

The feet are the most important thing for the hiker. You realize that when you buy shoes and practice for the Camino, but the real importance only gets through to you when you walk the Camino. You are going to feel them in ways you didn’t know you could. You will develop rituals to protect the feet like:

  •  Taking off your shoes and socks immediately after walking
  • Washing and drying your feet after a hike
  • Rub your feet with petroleum jelly to keep them supple
  • Feet up after a hike
  • Rub your feet with Vaseline in the morning against blisters.

You will be in awe of those feet that are having a hard time during such a hike. Your feet become such a Saint that you treat them with a lot of care. They determine the rhythm and the length of your path. Unfortunately you forget that after a while when you are not hiking so often anymore and they become holy off those feet.

Camino de Santiago, Why?

Why I wanted to hike Camino de Santiago? I don’t really know the main reason anymore. It still has an appeal to me after walking it. However, I would take a different route.

Life on the Camino is so simple. All you have to think about is eating, drinking, walking and sleeping. You get into a rhythm of eating, walking, eating, walking, eating, sleeping, eating, walking, etc. This rhythm is so nice. You will walk, eat and sleep, back to the basics of human existence.

While walking you are talking, contemplating or looking around, so you are never bored. The real world seems to get further away the more you get into the rhythm of the Camino. The everyday worries of real life no longer exist.

The only thing not nice is walking in the outskirts of large cities, you walk along the main road where cars and trucks whiz past and you have to watch out. For the rest, it is nature and authentic villages that strike the clock.

The people you meet will always be remembered as a caricature of the character trait that has stayed with me the most.

I would love to walk Camino El Norte, sometime, sometime.

Long distance walking

Together with a friend I did a parachute jump and looking for the next challenge we ended up at the 4 Days of Nijmegen, long distance walking. It is a beautiful event, but the crowds both along the side line and in it is not for me. I finished it in 2009 and in 2016 I was watching in Cuijk. What a rush, but also nice to see the pain on the faces of the participants and the determination to walk it out, beautiful. You recognize the fight of your own hiking. It was certainly a fight. It is tough to walk 40 km for 4 days in a row.

I still find training better than walking an event, because the event also involves the decibel of music. For me as an introvert, the hustle and bustle is a bit too much. In comparison, walking the Camino de Santiago is an oasis of peace where you have time to turn inside. At least the Portuguese route I walked.

Both require persistence and going beyond your physical limits of fatigue to walk them out. Time and again I am amazed at how deep you can go physically to draw strength to cross the finish line. There is always a spare energy to draw from when you think the barrel is empty. It is no longer about fitness, but about moving forward step by step.

At the end you are tired, satisfied, proud and you feel all the aches of suffering. Wonderful to experience, definitely recommended to do once in a lifetime. You against the kms.

Coming home after a trip

The most difficult thing about traveling is coming home. Especially getting used to the routine and the weather are the most difficult. Life just went on and no one is waiting for someone full of stories about events far away. What was fun and funny along the way may not be understandable at home with those who stay at home.

Back from Australia and New Zealand as walking the Camino Portugues I had a lot of trouble hooking into everyday life, especially mentally.

At the Camino I was mainly busy with myself, walking, eating and sleeping. And then you are suddenly back and everyday things turn out to be bigger. I was actually not finished with my reflections after walking the Camino. Therefore, I stayed for 6 months somewhere in between the Camino and at home, instead of picking up life again.

What did work out were small changes that you bring into your habits to maintain in your daily life while traveling, such as working no more than 5 hours a day and then taking a walk. The latter is unfortunately now worn out again, but I am busy building that in the routine again.

Why I can walk the Camino, but not learn to program

When it comes to walking, tennis and a few other things, I can apply the focus, concentration and motivation to achieve my goal. Then Gladwell‘s 10,000 hour rule is doable. While if I intend to learn to program, I spend no more than 1 hour behind my computer and then I have lost my motivation.

Will the difference lie in the interest you have in something? You are willing and able to do more if something interests you. I can walk for hours to practice for the 4Daagse or the Camino, but to program I can’t motivate myself to get behind the computer. It has nothing to do with computing, because figuring out for a trip I can get behind it for hours. So that 10,000 hours is only achievable if it is in your area of interest, I think.

Noise everywhere

I am waiting for the bus at the bus station of Utrecht Central. I get on the bus and it drives away. As we leave the station, I notice it gets quieter. Sitting at the station you are not aware of the decibels that are produced there, but if you leave it. There is noise everywhere, strange or not?

The whole world is full of noise: The murmur on the train of everyone who seems to be talking to each other at the same time. The noise in the morning announcing that the elevator is arriving in my apartment building. How loud that ping sounds in the otherwise quiet morning. But the most annoying sound is the sound that announces that the doors of the bus in Eindhoven will close. Is that possible at a lower decibel?

Listening to the sound, I think about noise that I had to get used to. I arrive in Denpasar, Bali. Every time you walk out of your hotel you have to get used to the street noises and especially the motorbikes and the honking. I compare all those sounds in my head and still arrive at the sound that announces that the doors of the bus in Eindhoven will close as the most annoying noise. It hurts your ears.

But actually I long for silence, not the silence of my loft, but the silence that you encounter while traveling in nature. I am again on the Camino de Santiago on nature pieces and on the deserted beaches of Australia and New Zealand. Oops, I’m traveling again in my head! This time looking for silence…. But Chile is a bit higher on the schedule to put the desert there and Patagonia must be wonderfully quiet. Book now?

The pace of walk

The Camino had always appealed to me not for religious reasons but for spiritual one. I always thought I would go to get some closure and before starting a new chapter. I thought I would go in 2014 in fall, then in spring 2015 I started arranging but didn’t go till this year. It was time! Two routes always spoke to me the coastal route in Spain and the Portuguese route. Both because of the coast and more nature and less people.

My preparation went mostly in looking for accommodations I could book up front with single room to ensure a good night sleep. And trying to walk as much as possible along the coast. Also I walked every day for 1,5 hour to get in the rhythm. Till Golenga it was what I thought it would be solo walks with some chats.

But a cold and the interactions on the Camino caught up with me. Although I enjoyed it a lot it was too much for me. And then I thought I can make my own Camino walking a few stages shorter. Taking the train/bus when the route didn’t appeal. Also making sure I didn’t walk in the industrial suburbs. Also making sure I walked the last 100km. Still it was around 660 km walk without the training and walks to touristic landmarks and supermarkets. Oh and not to forget the getting lost parts.

The Camino has a lesson for everybody mine was that I needed to be more in touch with what my body is telling me when it needs to rest. Something I will never learn I think, looking at my track record walking the ‘4Daagse van Nijmegen’ and playing too much tennis tournaments in the Summers.

So I still need to slow down my pace more in sports or maybe in life too sometimes. Follow my own pace in life instead of taking the pace of the people on my path and then I will be ok and I will enjoy life more is something I learnt after slave labor was over and I started being an entrepreneur. I think it would be easier for me to get the slowing done part right in entrepreneurship and working for a boss than in sports.
