Mijn zuster de negerin

Mijn zuster de negerin (My sister the nigger) is a book about slavery and the misbehaviors of slave owners which results in complicated relationships for his kids. This book I read in high school for my booklist. We had to read some books from writers of Curacao. And this book was one of the favorites when I was in school, because it was easy to read although the subject is heavy.

Why I can walk the Camino, but not learn to program

When it comes to walking, tennis and a few other things, I can apply the focus, concentration and motivation to achieve my goal. Then Gladwell‘s 10,000 hour rule is doable. While if I intend to learn to program, I spend no more than 1 hour behind my computer and then I have lost my motivation.

Will the difference lie in the interest you have in something? You are willing and able to do more if something interests you. I can walk for hours to practice for the 4Daagse or the Camino, but to program I can’t motivate myself to get behind the computer. It has nothing to do with computing, because figuring out for a trip I can get behind it for hours. So that 10,000 hours is only achievable if it is in your area of interest, I think.

Do you also have something that you cannot set yourself to do?

If you also want to walk the camino you could participate in this program.  In this program you learn everything you need to know to manage walking long distances.

Why ethnicity still matters to me

Is ethnicity a world problem or not?

In this world not everybody is as equal as anybody. By saying this we admit the world sees the color of people. This means that there is an ethnicity problem. Sometimes it is self-inflicted, but most of the time it is out of the unknown which scars us. Not being the same color scars us, because of what we read in the paper and the stories we tell each other about some ethnicity groups.

Books about ethnicity

Lots of authors have dedicated a book on this subject. These books are written from the point of view of the ethnicity of the writer mostly and not the majority white look on life. If you are interested and want to know what people of other ethnicity go through in their life you should definitely read some of the following books.

The color purple

This book is about ethnicity after black and white were declared equal in US. Some of the issues mentioned are still taking place in the USA of today.

Zwarte makamba

This is a Dutch book written by an author from the Dutch Caribbean. It is about being black and living the white way according to the surroundings.  The setting is of a black man who studied in the Netherlands and came back to the island he was born on, but can’t seem to fit in anymore. His doing is according to others on the island European Dutch instead of Islandic.

Dubbelspel

Another book from the Islands. This one is from one of the famous writers on the Island Frank Martinius Arion. His book also deals with the color difference that still lives on the island. Discrimination based on color and wealth is something that the Islanders inherited and keep alive from the slavery time. A good book that uses the setting of the domino game as a comparison to life chances.

Why ethnicity still matters to me

These books are all the view of the writer, but they are not far from what I experienced being born on a Dutch Caribbean Island and living most of my life in the Netherlands. You are born Dutch, but still on the outside people see a foreigner. Not all the time and times are changing with people traveling a lot. Slowly but surely the world is changing into a more diverse place where all ethnicity will be treated equally.

Half the population

Half the population

Although half the population is women, the wealth isn’t split fair between men and women. Man make 3 to 4 times more money than women. Also they are less likely to experience violence in their life. It starts at home with the upbringing, the education we get. Men are still seen as stronger and the one who gets the opportunity to work and earn money. Although science and donations have proven that if you give a woman money it is spend on the family. By this the next generation of her off springs women and men get better education and there for better jobs and better opportunity in life. There are lots of books dealing with this subject, but I will mention my favorites here.

I am Malala

This book I am Malala deals with the subject how hard it is for young girls to get an education in some countries. They have to literary fight for their right on education. Bringing their own life in danger. Is it worth it? Maybe not for the girls who die but for change in the country on the look on girls YES!

Dreaming of a book

Shantie

As long as I know Shantie, she wanted to write a novel.
We met at E-Quality (now
Atria) were she was doing an internship and I was working as a student-assistant. Over the years we kept in contact and every time we spoke: Shantie would tell she was working on her book. She wouldn’t tell what it was going to be about, just that she was working on it.

Publishing

Last year the big news came that she found a publisher. At the beginning of this year, she told me the book was going to be published in fall. So I was very curious about the book and the minute it came out in October, I bought it to read. The book is as good as I hoped/thought it would be.

Vervoering

Sorry, Non Dutch speakers. The book is in Dutch only at the moment. It’s a pity because I think the book deserves a bigger audience dealing with an international history subject in a fiction setting. The book is called ‘Vervoering’, which means transport/rapture in English depending on how you translate it.

The story

The story tells us about four generations of Hindi people on three continents. How life was for them at that time. And how they try to accomplish their Dreams and how sometimes their Dreams and hopes are accomplished by their Children in their own way. We learn about the hardship of each generation with their own struggles. A must read!!

Dreaming

I am so happy for Shantie that she accomplished one of her dreams of writing a novel. It’s such an inspiration to keep on dreaming and trying to accomplish your own Dreams!

Are we all racist?

Race doesn’t matter, I don’t see color. She didn’t mean it like that, don’t be so sensitive it’s just a joke, it’s a children’s party don’t spoil the fun!! Still there is racism

Racisme around the world

Lots of people that say that and stress the importance that they don’t see color. Yet you are confronted with almost only white models in magazines or Role models in life. This is an example in Western world, but not only in Western countries race is an issue it’s everywhere Africa, Caribbean, Latin America you name it. I come from a Tiny Island who says there is no discrimination. Yet they known lots of words for color shades of Brown! the shades range from white, red, yellow, light Brown, Brown, dark Brown and light black, black, dark black to describe people. Yet nobody on the Island talks about this as discrimination! It’s Europe and America who discriminate according to the islanders. A good docu about this on the Island of Curacao is Shadow of color (Sombra di kolo).

Book and movie

I like that the film Good hair already talked a bit about this subject, but the Book Americanah goes even deeper into the subject and touches the unsaid discrimination between colored people even from the same background. I like that the book discusses the subject from the view from an Nigerian woman and is a must read for people giving their opinion about the Dutch party Sinterklaas with the black Piets. Is it sensitivity or is there some harsh truth in this book we all just don’t want to see? Are we all racist? Is it then ok that everybody is?

Communicating through nonviolent communication

This blog was published on the Dutch online platform Mindz of Seats2Meet in Dutch.

Since my return to the Netherlands, I am following a course on nonviolent communication at De Leefstijlspecialist. What an eye opener that was for me!

Nonviolent communication focuses both on internal communication with yourself and communication with others. You will learn to get to the core by asking questions and naming the needs of others and yourself. What others are concerned, it is in early stages a guess at needs and feelings of others, which is a way of showing a form of empathy. Only after confirming that it is correct, you can name them.

Its creator, Marshall Rozenberg calls it a way of communicating from the heart. “We learn to see our relationships in a new light when we use nonviolent communication to listen to our needs and those of our relationships,” says Marshall. These lessons grabbed me by the throat and put my needs flawlessly in communication with others and exposing myself. I recognized myself in behavior patterns defend and retreat when I was faced with condemnations and criticism. And these patterns you can break with nonviolent communication. And if you practice a lot, you can make it a habit. It’s nice that you can make this type of communication your own. It does take time, but then you have something valuable! Practice, practice not only in role-playing games, but also in real life. It is learning by trial and error.

The five elements are important in this form of communication are:

  • observations
  • feelings
  • needs
  • request
  • Compassion

It is important that you clearly express yourself and immerse yourself in the other by using the above mentioned 5 items. Sometimes someone is not waiting for advice or reassurance, but only a listening ear then nonviolence communication is the way to communicate. We call this empathy. Just be there and reflect on what the other says. The person then feels understood and that alone helps incredibly for someone to collect his thoughts. Also of interest is daring to be vulnerable. And to distinguish between feelings and thoughts. It is a way to free yourself from cultural conditioning. There are probable more communication methods that have eyes for this, but this one came along and spoke to me, and I would like to share it with you. It’s a long way to change your method of communication, have mercy on me if I fall again into old patterns:-).
