Seeing the stars

When I arrived in Australia in 2013, I had never looked at the starry sky. Yet that was and is my wish to look at the stars in the desert of Chile. I already got close to 4x.

Star watching Australia

In Australia on the way back from Ayers Rock we stopped to stare into the void of the red sand at the sky. The bus driver turned out to know everything about the heavenly bodies and told us what we saw. My first introduction to staring at the starry sky, a wonderful experience.

Maori and the stars

Two months later I booked a tour of stories of the Maori and the role of the celestial bodies in it. A beautiful evening looking through the telescope and defying the cold, the Maori legend was told by every celestial body. From the emergence of New Zealand from one of those heavenly bodies! Beautiful stories and actually quite plausible those legends.

Mantras at full moon

A few years later I was introduced to say mantras during the full moon. I was a yoga and meditation weekend in Mexico. At full moon we built a campfire, in which we burned a coco. My coco was called Coco Loco and should have carried it with me the whole weekend! It represented what you wanted to release. The scenario was beautiful! Beautiful beach with campfire and full moon. And a verse was said about winds, sun, and moon. I was the one who looked around with admiration and thought wow!

Tiny House and starry sky

A year later at Christmas I rented a Tiny house with a telescope to stare at the starry sky in the Netherlands. It finally happened to look at the Dutch starry sky. But unfortunately it was too cloudy and the only thing you occasionally saw was the moon.

Then the explanation in observatory in Utrecht. Beautiful explanation and representation what it should look like, but also overcast and inhabited here! So there’s nothing left for me to travel to the desert of Chile to watch the starry sky!

The no worries travel

On my logging list had always been Australia, not only for the Australian Open, Uluru or Great Barrier reef. But also for the mystery of the country with its red dust roads and lots of open space. Something we don’t have in the Netherlands space to see nature with all those people living on square km.

To dive better into the Australian culture I thought of doing some seasonal work there or volunteer work, but for seasonal work you have to be under 30 years, So volunteering was the option available. I looked at the options and decided to go with Wooffing and Workaway.

Looking back at my sabbatical volunteering was the best way to get to know the country and fall in love with it. I fell immediately in love with the first place I was volunteering in the middle of nowhere. Fresh from Darwin airport I walked 20 minutes to the bus stop and took 2 busses to Palmerstone where my host picked me up for a car ride for about 2 hours.

The open space, the neighbor 10 km from each other, the small cattle in the garden, what else do you want? In the afternoon we went to the garden center where the pottery market would be for the next 6 weeks. I was welcomed in the most difficult Australian dialect I would here on my whole travel through Australia. It took me a whole day to get used to how they talked but loved the talks about politics, their life in Australia and the beauty of the nature nearby.

The whole time I was there we would make the ¾ hour drive twice a day, bringing pottery and setting them up at the garden center between rain showers. There was a cyclone coming and another had just passed. Cyclone season, something I forgot.

The start of the Christmas pottery market was two days later. Standing there helping the shoppers was a wonderful experience. Most of the shoppers made a 4 hour drive to get here for a talk about what was going on in the region and of course to buy some pottery between the showers.

It’s very nice to see how Australians interact. It is very different from the Dutch way or the Curacao way I was brought up with. I think the No Worries way they have, suits me better. I would love to go back doing some more Workaway or in a paid job, but definitely see more of the country.

It’s an experience of a lifetime so you should definitely go for it if you have time for volunteering. Workaway is a safe way to volunteer. Don’t forget to talk with the host about the important things like sleeping arrangement, what the work is you are going to do and for how many hours, if they can pick you up, the surroundings if there is something you want to see there. And also important the diet they cook in. I was lucky that all my Workaway experience would be considered about me not eating rice.

Everything for that one sunrise!

Byron bay, Australia

There you are among all tourists who come to party or go to the hippie walhala of Australia. I have a very different goal than theirs, namely watching the sun rise at the most easterly point in Australia. Yes, I like sunrise and sunset. Especially when that happens in the sea. But I am a bit scared this time about where I am going. Nobody seems to be coming with the same goal as me! As soon as I arrive at my hostel I ask if I can book the sunrise excursion, unfortunately the first 2 are full. There goes my plan, stay here as short as possible and then flee to a less touristy place.

I have to wait almost a week to see the sunset at the lighthouse or to walk to the lighthouse a little more than 2 hours on my own at 4 o’clock in the morning. It will be the first one, because drunkards on my way back to the hostel I don’t want to come early in the morning on my own.

The week goes fast

It’s not that bad at first glance. You only suffer from partygoers when they come back and luckily there aren’t that many partygoers in my hostel house. More people who want to continue to live in Australia. Wonderful to talk with them about life and the choice to emigrate. They all have long-term goals, while my only goal is to travel as much as possible and set up a business at that time.

Persuade

I even persuade a few to come and see the sunrise at the lighthouse. I spend the rest of the week chatting with my roommates, exploring the beach and nature reserve and watching surfers. And oh yes, we cook everything together that week! Enjoying it now!

The big moment

Then there is the big moment at half past three in the morning we leave with a small van towards the lighthouse. It is still cold and dark, but more than worth it! Never seen such a beautiful spectacle of a fire red ball slowly traveling out of the sea and the lighthouse light that keeps shooting between them. For a moment I even forget to take photos and movies, it is so beautiful.

Now years later

I think when the sun shines at this sunrise. Having breakfast at this sunrise on the beach and walking back through the beach! I’m glad I stayed in Byron bay to experience this! I hope to experience even more sunrise and sunset. So far I have Cascais, on the plane, Utrecht, Crete, Cuba and Eindhoven on my list.

High on my wish list is seeing the sun rise in one ocean in Panama city and set in the other!

What makes a wwoof experience in the middle of nowhere so special!

I booked my first wwoofplace via email. It was in the Northern Territory of Australia. Near Darwin for Australian standards, but for me a girl who lived in Curacao and Netherlands with other standards for near. It seems rather far traveling for two hours to get there and then having to be picked up by car and travel further by car for a short ride.

Why book something so far away from anything?

Just wanted some quiet time to get accustomed to the time difference, being in Australia and wwoofing without distractions, have a rest and meet the rural way of live in Australia. All that was accomplished in the 5 days I stayed with Fiona, her daughters, grandchildren and 11 dogs. Oh I forgot the two cows :-).

What kind of work do you do on a wwoofing spot?

It depends where you are and what needs to be done. Mostly you help were they need a extra hand or do chores they don’t have time for. At this place I helped with setting up a Christmas pottery fair and breaking it down after the fair, polished a lot of trophies and the kitchen cupboards and cleared the weed out of a small part of the 5 ha garden.

Australia

What you get in return?

You get to be part of the rural community and an inside in there life and way of living and thinking. Had lot’s of interesting conversations ad the pottery fair with others making also pottery for the fair. Besides that I had lot’s of time to rest do some work for Databeet and writing blogs! And especially reading and just enjoying the view of being surrounded by nature!

Australia

Tnx, Fiona and all for having me!

The magic rock in the middle of nowhere

Alice Springs, that where I have to be, in the heart of Australia. The nearest city to Uluru, still more than 300 km apart. But that’s near to Australian standard. So I am ready for a 21 hours bus ride from Palmston (near Darwin) to Alice Springs to play tourist for a few days!

And indeed as the bus gets further and further from the coast, the green gets replaced by the typical red sand of the outback. And then you’re in Alice Springs a small little town, know only by tourist for Uluru.

Guiselaine

What else is there in Alice Springs?

Well it’s one of the headquarters of Flying doctors and they have a museum about the flying doctors there that is quite interesting and apparently there was a big cricket test there between the Aussies and England, but didn’t see it. Because I decided to take the tour to Uluru and the Kata Tjuta.

Uluru Australia

Expectations

You read, saw pictures of it. So you can’t go there without expectations. After 4 hours of driving you get the first glance of Uluru, what a beautiful rock standing there in the sun. The nearer you get the more impressed you get. I was on a tour with 18 people and 2 guides. After driving around it, seeing the Kata Tjuta and read and hear at the information center about the history of the place. You get to walk around it. It was magic being so close to it, see it change colors with weather condition changing and sun position changing. I have never seen a tourist group of 18 people go quiet at the same time because they where so impressed by the magic of it! You truly feel you are on a special place on earth.

But….

There are somethings I find strange around the place. People are still aloud to climb the rock, although a lot of people died climbing it thru the years and with every dead the sacred place has to be cleaned of bad spirits. So it’s a risky business climbing it and you don’t show respect to other peoples culture. More and more people decide not to do it and just walk around Uluru, which is the respectful thing to do in my opinion.

Another thing I find strange is that although the place is given back to the original inhabitants. They are not the ones showing you around and sharing the history of the place with you. You get to see the place all through the eyes of others.

The last thing I was annoyed with although I can get it that the pronunciation of the local name of the rocks can be difficult is that on tourist demand they still use the European given name instead of the local name. Uluru is still called Ayers Rock and Kata Tjuta is called the Olga’s.

But still it is worth visiting, it is truly a magic place!

The good and bad times

I always thought Australia was the continent with permanent hot weather, boy what was I wrong. I started by arriving in the Darwin region when rainy season was in full swing, lots of rain and a small cyclone coming! Then in the south the summer started really late this year, leaving me one day wearing my jacket on the beach :-). But when summer finally kicked in I could experience the hot Australian summer fully, no worries about that! Loved it!

Wwoofing was nice in both places I did it, but left me sometimes exhausted and craving for some quality time on my own, no worries I got that later in other places.

Australians are very friendly, but still my experience with customs when returning back from Bali left me exhausted and wondering! I got a warning that yes I could do volunteer work on my tourist visa as I was doing, but that shouldn’t absolutely not turn into paid work in Australia. No worries wasn’t planning on staying in Australia!

Like I blogged about before it’s sometimes hard to pick the right place to get a decent sleep, because you can’t judge the hostels always up front on their quietness and sometimes there is nothing else left. Luckily the distances are big in Australia and Greyhound buses are good to catch up on sleep. No worries!

The first time I saw that the toilet and drinking water was available for free. I was surprised and looking for catches, but it really is and bbq in parks too and showers there and Wi-Fi in libraries, museums and galleries. And most museums, galleries, parks and a few tours are also free. For someone living in Holland were for all this services you have to pay, this was heaven!

But what mostly amazed me about this country was nature and the animals walking around in the wild. Lots of kangaroo, wallabies, koalas, dolphins, sea lions, possums, etc. Saw all of them in wild, no worries!

I can say my total 2,5 months Australia was an amazing experience to never forget! I will always have the fond memories of the people, the animals, nature, Australian open and the distances, the free stuff and the experiences. Thanks Australia for having me!

No worries!!

Hola Amiga,

Quetal?

Every country has a thing they say a lot. Here in Australia it is ‘No worries’. In the meaning it’s ok. You get used to this mentality that when it isn’t there you think something is wrong or you are in another country, because ‘no worries’ is always there. At least that is what I thought till I met the driver from hell!

Bussing in Australia

He definitely didn’t get the ‘no worries’ at school or where ever they learn it. It was a crazy first part of the bus ride with this bus driver. It started with me asking if he knew if the bus would stop at Two Wells a suburb of Adelaide. I got scolded at for asking such question, because he only goes half way and I should know that he only knows that part and that I should ask the next driver for the second part. Ok! And then a girl needed to pee. Most of the time you get out at one of the stops do your thing and get in, but this driver told the girl when she came back from the toilet that he was the only one who decides when she can pee. The girl was almost crying.

Shoetree

We were driving again and then two girls where talking sign language with each other on the bus, because one of them is deaf. And they were having fun and one of them got the giggles and couldn’t stop. Everybody was turning heads and looking at them and a smile appeared on everybody’s face. Almost everybody….. The bus driver stopped and walked to them and said to them they should stop laughing because they are disturbing the peace and quietness of the bus. This was too much for everyone on the bus so everybody started to say to the bus driver that it was ok that they were laughing. They weren’t disturbing anybody.

The bus driver then got back after the wheels again and  never talked to us anymore. He just stopped on the way but didn’t tell anybody if they could get out or not, etc.

So you could imaging our happiness when a new driver appeared and told us ‘no worries’ you can get out of the bus and get something to eat. And then everybody relaxed and was back to the ‘no worries’ mode.

I guess the no worries could be compared to the mañana  in a way. I guess you must a have come across in the almost three weeks on the road.

Lot of first times!

Dear Claudia,

I just left Singapore and I am now in the outback of Australia in Northern Territory, near Darwin! I enjoyed lot of new things in my first week, Going to give you a short list of first time things:

  • First time travelling without an end date!
  • First time in South East Asia.
  • First time I met a whole country obsessed with food. Almost like Holland is with the weather.  And yes they have every right to be, they have delicious food from all over Asia.
  • First time I saw a country that doesn’t have a lot of trash cans in public space and still is very, very neat! Not one thing on the ground! Talking about Singapore of course!
  • First time I interviewed people working for a psychiatric organization in a foreign country for a blog.
  • First time I was at an international airport with now public transport connecting it with the city. You have to walk 20 minutes to the nearest stop!!!!!!! Luckily a cabdriver gave me a lift.
  • First time I am wwoofing!
  • First time I am helping at a rural pottery fair!

Pottery

  • First time I am going to sit out a cyclone in Australian. Only category 1, but still.

Oh and I forgot, I enjoyed Singapore from the back of a motorcycle. Also a first. So as you can see I am enjoying myself with lots of first timers.
