Publish a blog in WordPress

Blog

Blog, blog post, post: These are all terms we use when we talk about blogging. But what do we mean by this? A blog means that someone tells us different stories on a website frequently. But blog can also be a post. A post or post is one blog. Do you still get it? Doesn’t matter, just blog!

Post message as a blog

Go to Post in the WordPress dashboard. If you choose All Posts you will see all blog posts that were ever written by you or someone else on your website.

All Post

Post new blog

Choose Add new to post a new blog post.

Blog content

In the small bar you specify the title of your blog. Enter the blog text in the large empty field. The buttons above it work just like any word processing program (for example, Word). You can make texts thick, bolt, etc. With Add Media you can add a photo / picture.

New Post

Snippet

To make your blog easy to find via google or other search engine, enter the SEO. You first enter the Focus keyword for this blog, for example, create blog post. After that you give a short summary of your blog with the meta description using as many keywords as possible on which you want to be found.

Snippet

Categories & Tags & featured image

With categories you can indicate where a blog belongs. As you can see, I have many categories where I subdivide my blogs into. This blog belongs to the category WordPress.

Tags are keywords. Give your blog as many keywords as possible on which you want the blog post to be found in search engines like Google.

If you use pictures or photos in your blog. Choose the photo or picture that you think fits best with the blog as featured image. This photo is often displayed in Google or other search engine together with the summary. This also applies to the summary of your blogs on your blog page then this photo can also be seen.

Publish your blog

Finally, one thing remains to be done, publish your blog. This can be done by scrolling up and clicking on publish under the publishing heading (on the right of the screen). If you have already published it, it will be updated. After every modification, no matter how small you have to click on update, otherwise the changes will not be implemented.

Events on your website

For the websites I build in WordPress, I use the All-in-One Event Calendar by Time.ly plugin to put an Agenda on the website. This plugin ensures that you can display your activities on the website.

Below I describe how you can create an event and make it visible on your website.

Events overview

You can see Events in the Dashboard of WordPress. Click on All events to see all events that have already been created.

All events

Create an event

Click on Add new to create a new event.

Add new

At the top you display the name of the event under Add New Event.

If you click on publish then the event will be published. After publication there is an update instead of publishing. We are not yet publishing the event, because we are going to supplement some other details.

New event

Event details

You will also see Event Details. Here you can view the details of the event. In Event date and time you indicate the time, date, time zone and whether it is organized multiple times.

Other details event

In Event Location details you display the location name and address. A google map is then automatically generated with the location on map and the coordinates of the location.

With Event cost and tickets you display the price of the event and if possible the link where the tickets can be purchased.

At Organizer contact info you display the contact details of the contact person.

Tekst

At Text you can enter text about the event. Here comes mainly background information. it works as with Post and Page text.

Category

On the right you see category. You can give your event categories so that they are easier to find on your website and for Google and other search engines. My events often get the Excel category if it is a workshop about Excel and WordPress if it is a WordPress course, etc.

Tags

The same applies to tags. Only tags are keywords, so you give an event as many keywords as possible so that it is easier to find. For example for an Excel workshop I give the following tags: Excel, Workshop, basic, Databeet.

SEO event

SEO

At WordPress SEO from Yoast you enter the most important keyword at Focus Keyword and at Meta description you provide the best possible summary of the event using as many keywords as possible.

Don’t forget to scroll up and click on publish or update to save and publish everything.

The best plugins for 2020

Plugin

If you build a website in WordPress you need plugins to support that website. Plugins are small parts of a website that gives the website an extra function than only the theme would do. I recommend the following 10 free plugins for your website:

404page – your smart custom 404 error page

With this plugin you can create a page where your website visitors come if they visit a non-existent page of your website. This is useful if you have deleted a few pages or have changed the names of your pages. With this plugin they get a page that you have created instead of an error message. On this page you can tell them that this page no longer exists, but that they can go to other pages on your website. My 404 page looks like this: https://wanderingguiselaine.nl/not-found/

Akismet Anti-Spam

With the Aksimet plugin you can stop spam on your blog. There are people who release robots on the web and they spend all day watching where they can bother people. Without this spam plugin your blog would be full of comments that don’t make any sense and that you can’t do anything with.

Bol.com partner plugin for WordPress

With this plugin you can earn a little money. It goes like this. You install the plugin and you can add books to every blog or page. If someone clicks on one of those books and buys a book at bol.com, you will receive a small commission. That person pays no more than the normal price. Beware you may not buy books yourself via this link from Bol.com unfortunately. Help me earn it and buy a book at bol.com through me 🙂 .

Broken Link Checker

With this plugin you make your life a lot easier. This plugin checks whether there are links on your website that do not work and report this to you via mail and in the menu. You can check and adjust those links if necessary or deactivate them. This way you will never have links on your website that are not current and that no longer work. This is checked every 72 hours on my website.

Classic Editor

Since WordPress 5.0 there are major changes to the appearance of WordPress behind the scenes, if you don’t want that yet, you can install this plugin and your WordPress will look just like before 5.0. This seems to be possible for a number of years and WordPress really wants to switch to the new one. Handy if you don’t have time to learn the new WordPress.

Contact Form 7

In addition to e-mail, you often want to be reachable in another way on your website. This is possible with a contact form. With this plugin you can place the contact form where you want on your website. You can also create different types of contact forms.

Cookie Consent

There is new legislation in the field of data retention of visitors to your website. You are at least required to inform your website visitors and give them a chance not to agree with your cookies. Cookies are small parts that you leave on the computer of the other person to collect data such as where from someone visits your website, etc. With this plugin you meet the minimum requirements.

Limit Login Attempts

We have already mentioned robots that leave comments on your website. This time it is about bots who want to break into your website. With this plugin you make it more difficult as they can only try to log in a limited number of times.

Social Media and Share Icons (Ultimate Social Media)

With this plugin you ensure that there are buttons with a link to your Social Media channels and that people can easily share your blogs via Social Media. The free version has many options. Take your time to set it up properly and this will give you the best results.

Yoast SEO

Everyone wants to be found well by their customers and Google. For this there is a plugin that can help you, namely Yoast. If you install this plugin you can design your snippets yourself. Snippets are small summaries that can be seen in Google. You can also enter a keyword. Furthermore, this plugin tells you if your snippet, keyword and structure of your story is good. Do not stare blindly at a green light, make sure the story remains legible.

These are the basic plugins. You can install even more plugins depending on your website and its function. And as a bonus, I recommend that you install a Google Analytics plugin so that you can see statistics for your website. With things like how many visitors you have, which page is visited the most and how long someone stays on a certain page, etc.

Take advantage of these plugins and start with your website. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Update your plugins

To keep your WordPress site safe, it is essential that you update the plugins used in your website. Updating will prevent your website from being hacked. That does not mean that it can never be hacked, but it reduces the chance of being hacked.

Where are the plugins?

Go down the dashboard in the menu and you’ll see plugins somewhere half way on the page. Click on installed plugins to get an overview of all the plugins that you or the builder of your website have installed.

Plugins

In the overview that appears you will see all plugins that have been installed. You also see that I have 13 active plugins and that none has to be updated. If there is an update you will see a number behind plugins. Click on update available to get an overview of the plugins you can update. Click on the update below the plugin to update the plugin that needs to be updated.

When the update is completed, you will see a green checkmark and you will now no longer see an orange circle with a number at plugins. This means that all plugins have been updated and you have finished updating.

Do this at least once a week!

Choose a theme

The design in WordPress is determined by the theme you choose. In this blog I discuss how you can choose a theme for your WordPress website based on attributes you find important.

You can choose a theme if you click on Appearance in the Dashboard menu and then click Themes.

Themes

Click on Add new

Add New

Click on Feature filter and a menu of options opens. These options are feutures you can choose to have in your WordPress design (Theme). Tick a few options and click then on apply filter.

Feature filter

By applying the filter you get Themes with the features you choose. Flip through the themes. Be on the look out if the theme is still being updated, how many stars it has and read about the experience of others with the theme.

When you have the theme you want install it and activate it. And you are ready to customize the theme to your willings.

Create menu with items in WordPress

WordPress automatically creates a menu with your website. Usually in this menu the items are not arranged as you want them. In this blog I explain how you can create a menu with the items in the order you want them in the menu.

Click on Appearance in the dashboard menu and then on Menu.

Menu

Create menu in WordPress.

create menu

In the next screen you will see the menu that WordPress has made for you. Give your menu a name under Menu name. I have given it the name Menu Databeet. On the left you see Pages and most recent, show everything or search. Here you can find all the pages that you have previously created for your WordPress site. Choose the pages you want to add by ticking them and then click on Add to menu. All parts have now been added to the menu. Now drag the menu items to get them in the right place. Do not forget to save when you’re done with putting the menu items in the right place. It does not matter which of the two menu save buttons you click to save.

Save menu

Good Job, you created a menu!

The world wide web is too crowded

World-Wide-Web

Like in the real world the worldwide web is lacking space. The population growth has taken its biggest growth. The planet is too crowded, but with the wars, hackers, less people being born, the planet has a chance to survive compared to the web.

A few years ago the first voices started screaming about to much domain names being claimed. At the moment we have a lack of space, mostly because people buy domain and don’t use it, forget about it or redirect to their website on another domain. Cleaning up this mess will be a big problem, because not all the old domains can be used anymore because of competition, strange use and other problems.

The big companies see market in this and start giving space away too email users to build their website on their domain. The space is limited and the possibilities are limited but growing. It’s still a try-out, but something to watch.

There are advantages and disadvantages in the use of these web spaces.  The advantages are that you can build a website at the moment for free, it’s protected by the big companies, the developing team and brainstorming teams are still interested in it. The disadvantages are that the space is limited, the design isn’t ok at the moment, you don’t have to pay for it and that if it isn’t used enough of profitable in money or marketing it will disappear.

Use it or not is a choice with a risk, but worth it if you are handy with it or willing to pay someone to set it up for you and can live with the limited possibilities. The possibilities are even less than in WordPress. So be aware before starting just because it’s free.

Draw your own IP address out of the statistics of Google Analytics

Own IP address

With Google Analytics you can see how many visitors have been to your website and how they have walked through your website and much more. But often these figures are blurred because you have been 100 times on your website in a month. Something can be done about this by removing your IP address, so that you get graphs and tables in Google Analytics from your visitors without including yourself as a visitor.

IP address

Ip stands for internet protocol. Every computer that is connected to the internet or network has a number that makes it visible to all other computers on the internet. This can be compared with unique telephone numbers. These numbers are IP addresses.

On the site ‘what is my IP address’ you can request your IP address: http://www.watismijnip.nl/ or mijnip.nl. These can be entered in Google Analytics, leaving you from the graphs, tables (numbers).

Google Analytics

I assume from this explanation that you have already installed Google Analytics on your website and have already used it. Go to www.google.com/analytics and login with your google Account information.

What is WordPress

What is WordPress

WordPress is a system to manage your website, blog or even webshop without having to know HTML or PHP

Originally, WordPress is a free weblog software. It is currently the most used content management system (I explain later). It uses the PHP programming language. All files are stored in a MySQL database (I explain this later). WordPress is open source, which means that you can download it for free and work with it to customize it.

CMS

Because WordPress is a content management system (CMS), the user can easily make changes to the website without technical knowledge. The user writes in plain language what should be on the website and the CMS translates this into HTML code. So the system writes the HTML code for you. A CMS is a software application (web application) that enables people to publish data and documents on the Internet without much technical knowledge. A CMS consists of:

  • Administrative module in which data can be entered, modified or deleted.
  • A database for storing data.
  • A presentation module, the actual website where the visitor sees the data.

MySQL database

MySQL database is a kind of rack cabinet where you have different courses (tables). In these tables you can place things, such as pages. When you add a page, message, category, tag or anything else in WordPress it is stored in a table. On your website, at the front, it is then retrieved from the database and displayed on your website. Without MySQL database you do not have WordPress.

WordPress.com

In addition to WordPress that runs on a server, it is your own or a rented via hosting package. Host WordPress also WordPress on their own system under WordPress.com. This free version is limited, but suitable for small blog or website. With WordPress.com it is not possible to use self-made themes and plugins. This is possible on a private server.

Functions

WordPress has a number of functions:

  • Templates are the design and appearance of your website.
  • Plugins, small pieces of software that you add to your website to make a contact form, for example.
  • Widgets are small modules that you can add to the website by dragging. For example, a search bar, a blogarchief, etc.

WordPress terms with which we sprinkle

WordPress terms

Sometimes you think you are the only one who does not know the WordPress terms that are used. There are many and often people talk to each other without knowing what they mean. I have therefore drawn up a list with the most important terms and their meaning. Have fun reading and if you do not find a term in the list and want to know, put it at the bottom of this blog as a response and I will explain it to you.

Blog

Usually these are texts that appear in reverse chronological order. The author (blogger) actually offers a log of information that he wants to share with visitors to the site. Usually it concerns text, but sometimes also photos, video (vlog) or audio (podcast).

Browser

Web browser, internet browser, browse program, is a computer program for viewing of web pages. Popular browsers are Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Opera.

CMS

Cash management system (CMS) offers users the possibility to maintain and adapt a website without needing knowledge of this code. So the system writes the code for you and you can focus on content.

Cookies

An amount of data that a server sends to the browser with the intention that it is stored and returned to the server on a subsequent visit. This way the server can recognize the browser again and keep track of what the user has done in the past.

Customizer

Customize your wordpress theme according to your own insight.

Domain name

Naming system, refers to IP address consisting of numbers. The name consists of a piece before the point and piece after the point. For example: wanderingguiselaine.nl. Nowadays more and more behind the point is possible, such as data.beet.

To download

Acquisition of digital information.

Username

Name to access a computer system. Together with the password, it is the identification just like your passport or identity card in ordinary life.

Google Analytics

A service from Google to collect statistics from a website and display them in detail. The purpose of this service is to give the administrator of the website a clear picture of visitor flows, traffic sources and pageviews.

Header

Header on a page or blog.

Homepage

Is the home page, home page. This is the first page of your website.

Hosting

Hosting is a service that offers people or businesses space to store information, images, or other content accessible through a website.

HTML

Markup language, language that indicates how something should look like.

Internet

Is a computer network.

IP address

Similar to phone number. Each address on the internet has its own number combination with which the computer can be identified and can communicate with another computer.

Link

Hyperlink, connection or link that refers to something else. By clicking on you will end up on the web somewhere else.

Menu

List of possibilities.

Page

These pages contain general information about the organization. Pages are used to publish content.

Plugin

A plug-in is a supplement to a computer program. Plugins are generally made to expand a program or give more possibilities.

Pop-up

A new, often smaller window that appears on top of the existing window. Pop-ups are widely used to advertise on web pages.

Provider

A provider is a company that offers users and businesses access to the Internet.

Reactions

Reactions from people on, for example, a blog that you have written.

SEO

SEO stands for search engine optimization. Finding your website on relevant keywords.

Social media

Digital diarrhea

There is so much online! We could spend our entire life searching online from birth till dead without doing anything else.  Having so much information online is a good and bad thing. Good because everybody can read up about a subject. So people can know more about the subject that interest them. But there is also a lot of crap online. This is where you have to decide when reading something online if it is ok information or crap. There is no directory for this. Everybody has to investigate this for themselves.

Another thing what can happen when you look for information online is that you keep looking and start going for parts of the subject you were interested in instead of the subject itself.  Then you find something and Google that, and find another thing and Google that and so on. It’s a bit like diarrhea, it goes on and on. This is when information over flow comes near.

So the best thing to do when researching a subject online:

  • Have a list of keywords you are going to look up
  • Set a time limit on your search
  • Go for good information and not crap ones
  • Is your source reliable?
  • Have a lot of different opinions on a subject read them all and form your own opinion on the subject.

Post vs Page

Post vs Page

You often see people using a post when it is more convenient to create a page and vice versa. What is the difference?

Post

Post is used to share news or a blog. A post is automatically displayed by date on your post page by WordPress sorted by date with the last post first. A good example is this post that you are reading now.

Page

You create a page for standard texts about your company, yourself, subject, etc. A good example of the page is the about page, which is called Guiselaine on this website.

Differences

These are the differences between Post and page:

  • A page is static page is not displayed by date
  • A post has tags
  • A post has categories
  • A post is displayed by date on the post page with the newest first
  • You can view an archive of posts
  • Posts can be sorted by categories
  • Posts can be sorted by tags
  • Pages are displayed in menus

Design in WordPress

Design in WordPress

The design in WordPress is influenced by Theme (template) you choose and possibly the plugins you add. You can also adjust the theme with programming. The latter is not recommended if you do not know enough about coding.

Theme

There are a lot of themes in WordPress. So much so that if you start searching without having an idea of how you want your website to show you get lost in the themes. There are both free and paid themes. There are also some themes that have a free and paid version. You can do more with the paid version. The prices of the themes vary greatly. If you have a small budget, a free theme is soon  good enough.

Find theme

Find a suitable theme by thinking about the following things in advance:

  • Colors in which you want your website (usually your house colors)
  • Menu where do you want your menu (top, left, right, bottom)
  • Do you want to use photos in your design and where and how
  • How many columns do you want
  • Do you want to use a certain font
  • Do you have a logo and have it on the website
  • Where does your logo appear on the website
  • Do you want a lot of fuss on your website or little?

And that is how I can come up with more questions, the more you think about how you want your website to be in advance, the easier it becomes to find a template that is suitable as the basis for your website. But remember with free template you can make small miracles, not big ones. Do you really want a customized website and do you have that budget (read large budget) then WordPress may not be suitable for you and you better take a programmer who customizes your website.

Tips on finding theme

Tips:

  • Choose a theme with support in the form of forum, faq and / or mail support, so you can ask questions if you get stuck in the theme.
  • Read the reviews of the theme, often you can see if the theme is usable.
  • Color is often adjustable so look through it.
  • There are a lot of free themes that use them.

Wordcamp a must if you do WordPress

Wordcamp Europe

I have been eyeing the Wordcamp congress for years. I even subscribed to one years ago, but didn’t make it. But this year I was dedicated to go to a few.

Wordcamp Utrecht

My first Wordcamp was the one in Utrecht. I got to experience it and it was interesting. Lots of talks. So an overload of information.

Wordcamp Rotterdam

The one in Utrecht was good so I decided to go to another one, the one in Rotterdam. I went for the talks about blogging, SEO and worklife balance. It was good. So good I decided that Wordcamp Europe should also be added to my schedule.

Wordcamp Europe

Wordcamp Europe was held in Berlin this year. So I got to travel to Berlin and see some more of Berlin. It was my second time in Berlin. I was there years ago for a conference on digital nomadisme. A whole other thing although a few WordPress people are nomads.

Back to the subject Wordcamp Europe. It had some nice talks about writing blogs, free software, but the most remarkable thing was that Marcel hiked to Berlin, 700 km, from his home town Berkel & Roderijs (near Rotterdam). He did this to get sponsor money for people who can’t afford going to Wordcamp. With this money these people are able to travel to Wordcamps around the world. He got more than 8,000 euros for this action. This can send a lot of people to the Wordcamps in the future.

Next Wordcamp

If the program is interesting I will do Wordcamp Utrecht and Rotterdam again, but Wordcamp Europe is already in my agenda! It is held in Porto, Portugal next year! So maybe see you in Porto?

Plugin, what is that?

Plugin

A WordPress site consists of:

  • The CMS system WordPress.
  • Themes: the design of your website.
  • Plugins: later more about this.
  • Widgets: similar to apps on your mobile, additions to your website.

What are plugins?

Pieces of software, written for WordPress and developed by third parties that you add to your website making it possible to add something to your website, for example a contact form.

Are plugins safe?

Plugins are a piece of software, so they can also contain vulnerabilities and vulnerabilities. There are a number of ways you can safely use plugins in your WordPress site, namely:

  • Before you install a plugin, read carefully what it does and other people’s experiences with it.
  • Choose especially plugins with 4 or more stars.
  • Choose plugins that are updated / maintained by the creator.
  • Update your plugins as soon as there is a new update.
  • If you still find a bad plugin, turn it off and delete it from your website.

Sometimes a plugin does not coincide with your theme or other plugin then you have to switch off the plugin and find another plugin to prevent problems on your website.

How do you find the right plugin?

Consider in advance what you want the plugin to do. Then search on keywords for a suitable plugin. Often you get a list of plugins that make contact forms for example. Look especially at the plugins with 4 or 5 stars. Read the description and the experiences of others with the plugin. Then install it and test if it goes well with your theme and other plugins.

Tip: With each plugin you install, you should consider whether you really need it on your website.

Share dashboard in Google Analytics

Dashboard Google Analytics

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is one of the most used tools to keep track of which pages people visit, how they move through your website and how long they stay, among other things. This is possible once you place the Google Analytics code in your website.

Dashboards

You have installed Google Analytics and then? An enormous amount of analysis is possible in Google Analytics. You are overwhelmed by data in Google Analytics. How do you get the most important for your website (read company / sales) and can you see them immediately? To do this, Google Analytics has Dashboards.

With Google Analytics you get a beginners dashboards with charts and tables about your website for free. This is not enough to get a complete picture of the visitors of your website. You can store 12 graphs, numbers or tables in each Dashboard. You can make this yourself or hire someone. Before you start, make a clear plan about what you want to measure and what the purpose of your website is. If all goes well, you have a business plan or project plan and you can translate and supplement this with the right statistics you need to view the figures once a month / quarter / half year / year. This allows you to better evaluate projects and adjust the progress and turnover if necessary.

Share dashboard

If you work with several people on a project or want to share the website with others, you can email the dashboard to another or a periodic pdf report automatically. These reports work one year and must then be renewed after that. The mailing is done in the same way as a newsletter. So you can always unsubscribe. You must register with the person responsible for Google Analytics.

When do you choose WordPress?

Choose WordPress

Build WordPress site

You are ready for it. You start with your own company. You have registered with the Chamber of Commerce and ready to start. The only thing missing is a website. Then besides the questions what you want and the design, the question is: Will I build it myself or will I hire someone? The answer to this question depends on the following factors:

  • Do I have time to build yourself?
  • Do I have the patience to sort things out?
  • Am I handy with computer programs
  • Do I want a complicated site?

If you answer yourself honestly to these questions, you will find out what the best option for you is.

Outsource

If you choose to have your website built by someone else, there are also many options depending on your preferences and budget, namely:

  • Customized building usually the website is then made in php of scratch by the programmer / website builder. This is also the most expensive option.
  • Another option was to have CMS systems (content management system) built as Joomela or WordPress and then partially customized. Even then there is a programmer who adjusts everything to the ‘standard’ WordPress or Joomela site. This option is slightly cheaper than the previous option.
  • A cheap, but no less interesting option is to have the website built with the standard possibilities of themes (designs) and plugins in WordPress or Joomela and with minimal coding
  • .A variant of this last option is to guide your website. You build and someone looks along and helps you find your way in WordPress or Joomela.

WordPress or Joomela

I think that choosing WordPress or Joomela is a personal choice depending on:

  • Your own preferences
  • Experiences of others
  • Which builder you choose.

I have worked with Joomela as well as WordPress myself and notice that WordPress is experienced as more intuitive than Joomela by users. And easier to explain to the user.

After construction

Your website is ready. Self-built, assisted or built, does not matter maintenance is required. With a custom made website, the technical update will probably continue to be done by the builder, unless you have the knowledge.

If you have chosen WordPress or Joomela, you can choose to do the maintenance yourself or have it done. Maintenance means more than just placing content on your website and adjusting your texts from time to time. Namely plugins, themes and WordPress have to be up-to-date. The latter many people forget and then their website is hacked or no longer works optimally.

It is better to have the necessary updates once a week / month than to deal with a hacked site!

Steps in building your website

Built a website

When building a website there are a number of fixed steps that you have to take or the builder or someone else. You can help by writing out your website before you start building the website. These steps are very important for the building process to proceed quickly. Of course, you can still make changes while building, but thinking while building is delayed and costs more money than drawing and writing.

  • Think of a name for a website
  • Register website name
  • Hosting party subscription
  • Install WordPress
  • Think about what you want to communicate with your website
  • Think about whether you do it yourself or outsource
  • Think about which pages you want
  • 1st version of texts to come up with pages
  • Thinking of what else you want with your website (think of social media, online sales, subscribing blog / newsletter, sharing photos)
  • Consider which colors you want on your website
  • Consider how your website should look like
  • Consider which pages should appear in your menu
  • Create pages in WordPress
  • Set up the blog
  • Load photos
  • Choose the plugins you need
  • Create a menu
  • Choose a theme
  • Get started with widgets on the sides, bottom of your website
  • Let your website rest for a while
  • View your lyrics again
  • Set up Google Analytics
  • View the look of your website are you satisfied?
  • Set up SEO
  • Share your website and see if you can do something with feedback
  • Promote your website

Use your imagination and go! Good luck with your website!

Communication as a customer with builder

Communication

If your project plan is ready or your company has registered with the Chamber of Commerce and the money is there to build a website. Is it time to think about a website. Often you are bound to a maximum budget and you actually want to use part of the money for your marketing and that new laptop. Then the question is how can I outsource my website as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible? This can be done by spending time on the preparation. First put on paper what your goal is for your website and what needs to be done. Then look for a web builder that fits your budget and can meet the minimum requirements you set for your website. Do not hesitate to talk with a piece or 5 and feel free to ask a quote of 3 or more. Think about it for a few days, ask more questions and then choose the one that best meets the requirements for you and your website. The preliminary work has been done, but then! Make sure at the beginning that it is clear on paper so that the preconditions for building are as well as boarded up. In practice it will become apparent that this is never the case, but then postpone it on time so that the website can be modified and miscommunication is avoided or extra costs incurred.

A few tips

  • Let yourself be informed about the CMS that is going to be used or rather google it. Ask a few examples to see. This already gives a good picture of whether you can carry out maintenance on your website.
  • Think of your domain name in advance and register it. If you know a bit about hosting, you can also immediately take out a hosting that is often cheaper.
  • Use examples from other websites to give an idea what you want, but be clear about what part of that website you are talking about. Think of the possibilities within your budget and the CMS you choose.
  • Discuss the safety of the CMS that you will use before signing the quotation. Remember that everything is hackable nowadays.
  • Make sure that photos, PDFs and other files that are on your website are ready in advance and delivered in the correct format. Enter the conversation with your builder which format they can work with.
  • Think about the use of color on your website. Do not be afraid to adjust the hue when you see it with text on the website. There is a world of difference between thinking and seeing.
  • The font is always an interesting one, because you prefer to choose one font for your website, communication, logo and promotional material. What is beautiful on the website is not always beautiful on promotional material or vice versa. Think of readability. Here too, apply it and adjust it as soon as you doubt and preferably not at the end. Do not frustrate your web builder and yourself by trying out 30 fonts, keep it at max 5 types.
  • Consider in advance on which Social Media you are and which you want to use in your communication with your fans, customers, competitors and followers. What is common in my industry? What do I think is a fine communication channel when it comes to social media? Is my target audience there.
  • Which other communication channels, gadgets do you want to link to your website. Are they really coupled? Does it fit my budget? Can I also operate them myself or can I hire someone because of me?
  • For SEO, prefer to hire someone specializing in communication or searching the web. This benefits your ranking and snippet in Google and other search engines.
  • Sign up / log in to Google Analytics and webmaster. With Google Analytics you can gain insight into how often your website is visited and which parts of your website they visit. The default dashboard of Google Analytics is sufficient in the beginning. Later on, it is convenient to dive in or to hire a specialist in analysis.
  • Go beyond a website. For example, a webshop, remember that there is a budget attached to it to function properly, to comply with privacy legislation for your customers and the security of payment systems that you will use in the webshop.
  • Remember that if you have a website. Maintaining it also costs time and money. Or the money that goes to your web builder, the one you hire to do the maintenance or your own hours. Remember that it will take more time in the beginning than later. In the beginning you adapt a lot of texts after conversations with others. What seemed so beautiful on paper is often not what you want in practice.
  • Always ask your web builder for 3 adaptation rounds. Use the time between this adaptation round not frustrate your web builder and yourself with what is not yet there, but look for input from outside on the parts that are ready as agreed. Collect this input and sleep over night about it. Make of this input a clear document that you can communicate with your web builder, so that you can get the most out of the budget and time that you and your web builder have.

Branding is it necessary

Branding

When we start working or entrepreneurship we are talking about networking and marketing. Networking is going to as much events as possible and talk as many people as possible. Is this profitable? Too me it seems like not. When I go to these events I mostly great about 10 people and speak to mostly 3 people about what they do and what I do. It seems in the beginning useless, because they are not looking for your products or don’t have the money for your products. The odd thing is they still remember you after a few years and if you still exist they are willing to invest in buying the third or fourth product you renewed.

Is this marketing? Yes, long term marketing, marketing that stays with you if you are dedicated to it and willing to renew yourself every time again and again. Not going for the things everybody goes for, but smalling your business into the niche that is yours, and yours only for a few years till lagging kicks inn or you get frustrated in doing the same thing over and over again.

Marketing goes into branding. The business card you gave away is worth more than you can imaging at the moment or less sometimes. So the person you didn’t want to talk to can be the client you want, but also the hell you have to kick out as a client forever.

Living of the exchange of social capital

This blog was published on the online platform Mindz of Seats2Meet in Dutch.

It started with my dream to wander for longer periods across the world. Googling I came across organizations Wwoof and Skill Stay where you in exchange for accommodation and meals will help  in people’s homes or businesses. Wwoofen is all about businesses and people who produce organic as much as possible. Skill Stay is more about skilled services offer. This was my first introduction to the concept of swapping. Through these organizations, I could make a big part of my journey through Singapore, Australia, Bali, New Zealand and Hong Kong possible. In exchange for lodging and meals I helped in the garden, on a Christmas market, in the kitchen, behind the counter and I made booklets for tourists. Very diverse tasks. The advantage of such trips is that you become part of the life of the residents up close and even partly join them. You also have time to see the area and be a tourist. In the travel world lots is possible on the basis of exchange.

When I was back in the Netherlands I continued services also through swap. Build a website in WordPress for nutrition advice and training non-violent communication, transferring Wix website to WordPress for reading and healing, etc. I wondered how far you can go with swapping? Well pretty far. From September I’m going to build a website and do marketing for a number of books in exchange for living space. So for the first life needs in Maslow’s pyramid exchange service is possible. Can we do more through swapping? Are we going to talk about a swap balance instead of a financial statement?

WordPress, anybody can do that!

WordPress, the site construction tool, is the invention of the century! Anybody with (a little bit of) perseverance and frustration tolerance can build a simple website. The only question is: Is it worth the frustration building the website yourself? Is it really cheaper?

Sign

That depends ….

  • Do you have any assignments with near deadlines?
  • Do you have enough time?
  • Are you frustration resistant?
  • Do you have patience?
  • Do you have a little feeling for how computer programs work?
  • Do you like solving puzzles?
  • Are you eager to learn new technical skills?
  • Do you know exactly what kind of WordPress website you want?
  • Are you going for a simple website?

Do it! But in all other cases ….. Stick with your field of expertise and let someone with knowledge of WordPress built it for you.
