2nd quarter and charity 3rd quarter turnover

Business is starting to pick up again in terms of work. The second quarter turnover was better than the first, but still feeling the Coronameasures. Everyone is working with some kind of new normal (corona rules) to get back to work. And also I’m going to do some exciting new projects in the 3rd quarter so follow me on Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) and my blog for the announcements.

Niks met cijfers

One of the new projects I am working on is Niks met Cijfers (Nothing with numbers, a Dutch project). It was therefore launched at the end of the 2nd quarter. The website is there and the first blogs and online courses as well. You can expect a lot of Excel, Big data, research and data visualization on this site in terms of blogs and online courses. There is still a rhythm to find so that I will post once a week on this website, but that will be fine in the near future. Niks met cijfers can also be found on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. On Social Media I will also share tips & tricks besides the blogs and offers. You can also register to receive the Niks met Cijfers Newsletter (Dutch only) once a month from August 13, 2020.

To hike

I have also made many new hikes and I am making progress on the Pieterpad. Soon some blogs about the Pieterpad will come. For now there are videos  about the stages of Pieterpad I hiked to get an impression of the surroundings of the Pieterpad.

Charity

This year I started on January 1 to donate 1 percent of my turnover per quarter to a Charity. In the 1st quarter a nice amount went to Food Bank Curaçao and for the 2nd quarter I will send a nice amount to Wegloophuis Utrecht. In both quarters, turnover was somewhat disappointing due to Corona measures, unfortunately.

Charity 3rd kw

In the third quarter, which runs from July 1 to September 30, 2020, 1 percent of the turnover will also go to charity. This time for research into ALK a genetic mutation that causes lung cancer, shortly said. I found out about this charity a few weeks ago because a former colleague of mine is suffering from this. So let’s hope that the upward trend after corona measures continues in sales for a good donation. If you want to donate directly, you can do this here and if you want to know more about ALK, you can read here more.

A good and healthy 3rd quarter!

7 lessons I learned from the finance course on Instagram

Because I would like to reach FIRE (Financial independent and Retire early) in a few years and want to get rid of my student debt as soon as possible, I took part in the PorteRenee financial course. In this week long Instagram course I learned the following 7 things.

Demotivator

The first assignment was to keep track of all your expenses for a month and how you feel when you spend them. The idea behind this is that there is an emotion behind a certain purchase that makes you buy things that are not needed.

In my student days I kept track of exactly what I spent and at what. So now again I am doing it for a month for even the smallest expenses.

A nice tool is the Demotivator. With this tool you enter the amount for a purchase and your income and then the tool calculates for you how many hours you have worked for this purchase. If you do this before you buy something, you will not buy anything anymore.

Weekly money

Work with weekly money instead of monthly money for groceries and fun things (Can also be used for gasoline, etc). As a result, you cannot spend everything at once at the beginning of the month. If you spend it immediately after you have transferred your weekly money, you will have a second chance the next week to budget more.

Open different accounts or jars

At Banks like MoneyYou and Knab you can open jars or different (savings) accounts without it costing more. As a result, as soon as your money is received, you can distribute it among these jars and then your money has a destination and then you can no longer spend it on things that you do not need.

Pay yourself first

I already apply this principle in my company, but now it should be done privately. So every incoming money I will allocate a percentage to fun stuff and investment jar in addition to a percentage of course for fixed expenses and other jars.

Patience don’t buy right away

Put together a list of things you want and then you can budget to buy them. But even more important if they are on that list, it will automatically become clear whether you really want them or not. Maybe you think later after 30 days I don’t want it anymore and then you have saved again.

Make it more difficult for yourself to make purchases

For example, remove your payment details from online web shops, so that you have to fill them in every time you want to buy something. You have to do more to get it, so you will think about the purchase and then you do it less quickly.

Create a mood board

Create a mood board with your big dream on it and hang it somewhere you pass frequently, so you are constantly reminded of your dream and saving money for it instead of spending it on things you don’t need.

Bonus with paying yourself first principle I managed to reach 60 percent of my investment goal already this year. Thanks to some investment profits.

7 Tips to save on groceries

Groceries always come out more expensive than you had in mind and then you also forget some ingredients and you have to go back and take too much with you. Do you recognize this? Then these tips are also useful for you.

Make a weekly menu

By deciding in advance what you will eat, you only get the products that are needed for your meals that week in the supermarket. You no longer have to decide in the store what to eat and then take things with you for more than you can eat in a week. You can save even more by connecting the menus during the week, so that you can use ingredients that are left over from one meal into another one.

Create a shopping list

Having a shopping list and sticking to it keeps you in control of spending on groceries. Also take a look at what you already have at home and do not put it on your shopping list. Don’t be tempted to buy other things that aren’t on your list. Put some tasty things on your list so you don’t have to feel tempted in the store to buy something that is not on your list. Once caught something that is not on your list then you think oh that is also possible.

Shop for groceries once a week

The less you are in the supermarket, the less tempted you are to buy more. Pick a day and go with your list and buy everything you need.

Leave A-brands

Leave the A-brands and choose a good alternative house brand if you can. Saves a lot of money. A-brands are often at eye level, but if you look down or up, you see the house brands and they are often just as good. Sometimes they even come from the same factory.

Do not go shopping with an empty stomach or children

If you are hungry, you can buy everything that you like at the moment, because your stomach tells you that you need it. You don’t need them at all. Eat something and then go shopping and leave your children at home, because they often want something and that is not on your shopping list, so you spend more money than budgeted.

Eat leftovers

If you have food left over, you can easily eat it another day, so keep it. It is nice for lunch or sometimes you can freeze it. So storing leftovers doesn’t have to mean eating the same food for three days.

What amount to budget for groceries

If you have no idea how big you should budget for food, NIBUD has guidelines you can try out to see what your shopping budget will be. I took there guidlines and put my groceries budget at 49 euros a week including small groceries as a bottle of water and lunch out.

My after Corona Bucket List

I would like to share with you my bucket list for after Corona era. Actually, it is more of a goal list next to a wish list. There are financial goals, but also travel goals. This list is the result of many hikes where I had a lot of time to think.

Goal 1: Reach FIRE before I am 50

Fire stands for Financially Independent and retire early movement. A few years ago I had already thought that I wanted this and this year I discovered that there is a name for it, namely FIRE. To achieve this, I am accelerating my repayment of my student debt of 33,000 euros and I am building buffers for Databeet as a private of one year each. With Corona measures, I have noticed that a 3-month buffer, which is usually recommended, is too thin. So hence 1 year for both private and Databeet. I have also expanded my investment steps. I have been investing through Crowdfunding and bonds since 2013. That yielded quite a bit. So I expanded this in 2018 with Brightpensioen and this year even with shares and EFTs. So for the time being I am on schedule.

Goal 2: Lose weight

This is a tricky goal associated with my medicine use that needs to be tapered off in very small steps, but with every step it takes 2 kilos off. The medicine can be good for somethings, but have very unpleasant side effects for me such as gaining more than 20 kilos without eating more or more unhealthy food, liver values that are too high, slower eye / hand coordination and some more I won’t bore you with. These are the ones that bother me the most, so I decided to take the risk and phase it out.

Goal 3: Passive income

Because of the Corona measures, I finally have time to do the things that were on my target list for a long time, namely building up passive income. So I am busy with Affilliates in my blogs, collaborating on barter principle, making ecourses from the lessons that I have been given for almost 8 years and eventually developing my book ideas into books.

Goal 4: Walking, Walking, Walking

I walk two to three times a week, long distances from 15 km and up at a time. I like to share these beautiful areas with my followers so soon I will launch my special Hiking website. Then my hiking adventures abroad in the past and my future hiking adventures will also be on display.

Goal 5: Travel even more

Yes my travel bucket list is long. And my work allows it to travel again so San Francisco, Seattle, Bhutan, Chile, Chernobyl, Auschwitz, etc can expect me. Hopefully the Corona measures will ease soon.

Goal 6: Tiny house with mini vegetable garden

My ultimate bucket list item is to live in a Tiny house with a vegetable garden around it. Where I don’t know yet, but the tiny house I already know which model I want. And the vegetable garden is also going to be okay since I already took two wild picking courses last year and will be following another one next year.

What are you looking forward to when relaxing the Corona measures? And what do you still want?

I don’t want to know about my student debt

Last week I took part in the student debt challenge of Maaike van fuck that student debt (fuck die studieschuld). I have been following her for a while and saw the challenge and thought Lets see. The challenge consisted of 7 assignments in 7 days. Here are the challanges and how I did them.

Challenge 1 No spending

The first day was immediately a tough challenge. You weren’t allowed to spend that day. Neither cash, nor debit cards and not via internet. That day I had to send a registered mail to one of my clients. So I had to get out of the house and to the mall. I did it. I only paid for it that day (That was allowed).

I am not someone who buys, buys and buys. Still, it was difficult not to go to supermarket and get something that day. I survived the first challenge.

Challenge 2 Pocket change

Find small amounts that you spend on your account and choose one and don’t spend it for a whole week. This was a little easier now with Corona measures than usual, because when I work on location I sometimes buy lunch. Those are small amounts, but quite often. This also worked more or less this week, because on Thursday when I was working on location my water bottle broke and so I bought water. Little cheat 😊.

Challenge 3 Repayment goal

On day 3 you had to come up with a repayment goal. So I have thought that of every part of an invoice amount that goes to private (this is a fixed percentage per invoice), 2 percent of that will go to my student debt. I opened a special redemption savings account in Knab for this, because you can transfer a minimum of 5 euros to Duo. And since it concerns every invoice that I get paid, it can be large or small amounts. Every time there is 5 euros on it, I will transfer it.

I also have a nice thermometer hanging to visualize my goal. I am curious how much will be gone by the end of 2020. You can help😊 by buying my Excel ecourses or making your purchase at bol.com and booking through my website. On the side you see the banners to make your purchase.

Challenge 4 Sell something

Sell one thing. I already had a stand for the laptop on Marktplaats (Dutch ebay) and I added a large storage box. I no longer need both, because the first does not fit my laptop and the second I have cleaned up and put away those things, minimizing remains a goal for me. This assignment was a breeze for me.

Challenge 5 Tell about your student debt

Tell someone about your student debt. Most people around me know that I have a student debt, but not how big it is. Until 2012, I paid more than the minimum amount each month. That was easy with my salary back then. When I started for myself, it did not seem wise to me, because I first had to look and have a buffer. After that, I went on a trip and paused the payoff or paid off the minimum so far. I have over 33,000 euros left to pay off. So I told someone, you the reader 😊.

Challenge 6 Less ads

Make sure you get less advertisment. Because I adhere to minimalism, I receive little to no advertisment. I went through my email anyway and canceled two more newsletters. I already had a Yes / No sticker so no problems there.

Challenge 7 Pay a small amount to your student debt

Transfer an amount to Duo. Okay, I didn’t expect that. Do I really have to transfer an amount to Duo right now? I have not sold anything through Marktplaats so that money was not there to transfer. Oke, I will transfer 5 euros! So my first repayment in years has been done! Although the minimum that is allowed, but a start.

The challenges were nice challenges and got me thinking about my student debt. It is my own fault that I still have it. And it has to go, because otherwise the capital that I am building with investing has no value. So Duo can expect a lot of 5 euro transfer from me.

Chocolate fair

For the second time I couldn’t stop myself from going to the Chocolate fair in Amsterdam in February. It is a fest for your eyes, nose and stomic. I tried a lot of chocolate that are not sold in The Netherlands (yet).

I also love the stories behind the chocolates. Every chocolate there has its own story and the people displaying their chocolate are more then willing to tell the story. Most of these stories is about what they are doing for the people harvesting the chocolate and envirement. The chocolates sold on the fair all are into improving the lives of the farmers and workers. Not only the working condition but also higher income.

I can’t wait till my favorites are sold here in stores. I am looking forward to buying the chocolate fruit juice and some dark chocolate with nuts but without sugar. The last one you can buy in every supermarket in Portugal, why not here?

No I am not ….

No, I am not eating more

Unfortunately, was it that easy. That I started eating more and by eating less I could regain my normal figure. I even eat less than before, because I am quite afraid of gaining even more weight. It seems that every time I eat something I gain a kilo.

No, I don’t exercise less

I certainly do not exercise less. I walk an average of three long walks a week (17 km or more at a time) and a few shorter 1-hour walks at speed. I still do this during Corona era. Outside of Corona I also swam once a week. But the pounds are from before Corona.

No, I do not eat less healthier

At least I eat like you if you don’t count not eating rice, because I don’t eat that. I eat quite a few vegetables and a lot of fruit. I love fruit. I’m not such a bread eater so it often becomes a salad, soup or fruit. I also don’t eat a lot out or on the road, because I find it expensive in the Netherlands.

Then what?

I take medication that makes you fatter as a side effect. Yes really! Since 2017 I started taking antipsychotics (Risperidone, 1 mg) again and saw with my own eyes how my body changed without being able to do anything about it. Now 80 kilos and I was 56 kilos !!!!

Then why do you keep swallowing?

Yes, I already take the lowest dose in which this medication comes. The tapering went off overnight last time. And therefore went wrong in my opinion. There is little study on how to reduce this medication, because people used to think that you have to take this medication your whole life. I would like to phase out this medication gradually. Maybe swallow 1 pill less in a week in 3 months and then the next 3 months 2 days less in a week, and so on. Whether this could work? No idea? But being so fat is not an option for me either! I refuse to buy new clothes (read 2 sizes bigger; from small to large; 34/36 to 38/40), because this is not my size.

You don’t believe me?

I would say take this medication for six months yourself and then we will talk again. As your belly grows and the rest stays muscular. Yes as if you are pregnant. I am not the only one with this problem with antipsychotic medicine.

No reason Retroprints

Would you like to try out our retroprints in exchange for a blog on your website?

Actually yes, I wanted to print some pictures for my house. So the retroprints seems like a good idea.

Retroprints Printfabriek

Pick out photos

It’s always a lot of work figuring out photos. I was allowed to have 2 sets of 8 retro prints printed at the Fotofabriek (Photo Factory). Okay it turned out to be some pictures of family, friends and nature.

Retroprints Printfabriek

Upload and prepare for print

The system is very simple, you upload the 8 prints of a set and then you can do everything with the white borders around the photos and the photos themselves. I try it out, but decide to only color the edges around the photos and have one of my company Databeet‘s logo placed on the white border.

When you’re done the system asks to save and then you can press order and they will be uploaded. Pay close attention to these steps if you have made several sets that you order the right one.

Retroprints PrintfabriekRetroprints Printfabriek

Waiting rewarded

Then I have to wait and within 2 working days I had the photos at home. They were successful and cheered up my house the retro prints. If I were not a minimalist I would also have a photo album printed. Maybe a nice gift idea that photo album? I will think about it.

Thanks you Fotofabriek to let me try the Retroprints.

Retroprints Printfabriek

I don’t earn any money with the links in this blog. I was allowed to try two sets of 8 Retroprints for free.

1 percent turnover to Wegloophuis Utrecht

1 percent turnover to charity

This year 1 percent of my turnover goes to charity. A different charity each quarter. In the first quarter, 1 percent went to the Food Bank Curaçao. From 1 April to 30 June 2020, 1 percent of the turnover will therefore go to the Wegloophuis (Runaway House) in Utrecht.

Introduction to Wegloophuis

At the beginning of 2017 I had a psychological relapse and my anti-squatting contract in Arnhem expired. There were also few assignments due to my health condition. I was told that the Wegloophuis in Utrecht could guide me from the dip. So I called and I was able to drop by immediately for an intake and the next day I moved into a room in the Wegloophuis. At the same time it also became clear that I could get a home in Eindhoven in exactly one month.

Who are the Wegloophuis

The Wegloophuis was a warm bath of volunteers and social workers who talked to you, helped you with everything you needed to get in order. I was helped to get my finances back on track and my life and also with moving. I am eternally grateful to them.

De Wegloophuis

De Wegloophuis is for people who experience temporary psychological problems and prefer not to go to “normal” psychiatry or can’t be helped there. They help you get your life back on track psychologically, physically and financially. It is different from psychiatry. It is more about activating people from within the person.

In any case, if you purchase a service or product from me this quarter, 1 percent will go to the Wegloophuis in Utrecht.

The 5 types of hikers

In my opinion there are 5 types of hikers among the hikers. I would like to share with you those 5 types of hikers you can encounter on a walk.

The time hiker

This kind of hiker wants to start on time. Preferably the first and also the first to be back. This walker is all about getting off the trail as quickly as possible. Often they hardly talk to other walkers.

The fun hiker

The fun comes first for this hiker. This person prefers to chat with other walkers all the time. As an introvert, these walkers are the most dangerous for me :-). Although a chat is occasionally quite pleasant.

The fitness hiker

This hiker almost runs to keep his or her fitness level. Time is not important. The motto has been sporting for another day. These walkers walk at a nice pace, but also have an eye for the environment and fellow walkers.

The environment observer

The environment is the main reason that this hiker walks here. This hiker enjoys the environment. Nature or the district / city are of interest to this walker. You can recognize this walker because he or she often walks with a camera and occasionally stops to discover and view things.

The cheater

This hiker sends husband / girlfriend / friend to the highest / furthest post for stamp at checkpoint and waits with a drink. This walker wants a medal, but does not want to hike the entire route.

Which walker are you?

Which of the 5 hikers are you? I am the environment observer. I thoroughly enjoy my surroundings and definitely stop for photos on the way. I always have a camera with me.

5 reasons to live in southern Spain in winter

My dream is to escape the winter. I did that all winter in 2013/2014 by going to Australia and New Zealand. And nowadays I do two winter months Curaçao. But that is not enough, because there is still winter …

I have therefore come up with 5 reasons why I should live in southern Spain in the winter.

Speak Spanish

I am fluent in Spanish. There is certainly room for improvement and I am working on that. But I wouldn’t have to leave it for the language. And yes, if you live in the country, you will learn the language faster because you are required to speak it.

Spring temperatures in winter

In southern Spain, lovely temperatures prevail in winter, namely spring temperatures. During the day, take off the jacket and sit in the sun. Can be much more outdoors without shivering from the cold.

Rain

The rainy season is mainly in the spring, so during the winter you will not be bothered by that. Sounds heavenly after an autumnal winter this year.

Delicious food

This may be my idea, but I think fruit tastes better in Spain and South America than in the Netherlands. And also in winter there is still fresh fruit there in Spain. It is not only about the fruit, but also the olives and fish. The whole food culture is different and delicious!

Pace of life

Life is just a bit calmer in Spain than here in the Netherlands. It is between South America and the Netherlands. And I think I would like that.

Farewell to Strijp-S in Style

How do you say goodbye to Strijp-S in style?

I lived in Strijp-s, Eindhoven for 2.5 years and saw the marathon runners and runners passing by, but never organized walkers. After my move I found out that the Eindhoven marathon has a walking edition the Saturday before the marathon. The perfect farewell in style!

Walking edition marathon of Eindhoven

So I registered for the 20 km. The perfect farewell in style, because with the 20 km you mainly walk in the area where I lived. So I went to Eindhoven Strijp-s for the start and walked there through parts of Eindhoven that I knew, but also pieces that I did not know. Even though I had lived very close to those places.

Farewell to Strijp-s in style

The weather was good, read dry. It was already autumn, so we needed a coat and sweater. This walk was also a perfect preparation for the 4 Days of Marbella that I would walk later in the year. The weather was not comparable, but the distance of 20 km was. Even though I would walk 20 km 4x in a row in Marbella.

The finish

The finish was great, because it was almost at the door where I had lived. So the perfect farewell to Strijp-S in style. What more could you want in the same street where you lived received a medal as a farewell to Strijp-s.

Bye, Bye Torenallee & Eindhoven!

The 5 lessons I learned from the book Blondies invest better

I share 5 lessons with you that I learned from the book Blondies Invest Better (Dutch book Blondjes beleggen beter). Well, I am far from blonde, but a woman so this title appealed to me. Plus I am looking into investing so this book came at a good time. The book contains many good tips and explains many terms from the investment world. So a must for beginners to read.

Lesson 1: Investing is possible in anything

You can invest in:

  • Own company
  • Antiques
  • Art
  • Classic cars
  • Holiday home
  • Crypto Currency
  • On the stock exchange: Shares, bonds and other securities.

This book is about investing in the stock market. I have been investing in crowdfunding since 2013 and with savings you get very little return in Europe. So the next step is to invest appropriately on the stock market. The book discusses the different ways of investing on the stock exchange.

Lesson 2: You can practice investing

The book lists a number of “games” with which you can practice investing on the stock exchange. A good step as a first time investor to invest with fictitious money. Note that the games are mainly about short-term profit, while in practice investing in investing is long-term profit.

Lesson 3: Diversification is the magic word

I will continue to save to have a buffer for unexpected events. I am thinking of having a constant 3 months income on my savings account. So if you use it immediately replenish. Furthermore, I have now set up crowdfunding quite nicely and I earn from it. So I will continue to do that. Now it is time to start investing, there too I go into investing for diversification. For example, I let Brightpensioen invest for me and I will invest myself through Degiro. I will seek diversification in stocks, bonds and mutual funds. So a mix of these.

Lesson 4: Map your finances

For years I have been making a budget for my company Databeet as well as for private use, so I map out my finances. In addition, I set goals. In the book, the writer gives the tip to set both 5-year goals and 5-10-year goals, because you have to take this into account when you make your choice in what you invest.

Lesson 5: Set a limit for buying and selling and check your order

You can set for how much money you want to buy a certain share and how much and then the system automatically executes this assignment for you when that price is reached. It is also useful to set a limit on which you want to sell. And a very important tip is to check your order before sending it, so that you don’t buy too many / too few or weird things.

1 percent gross turnover to the Food Bank

1 percent turnover to the Food Bank

This year I want to donate 1 percent of my turnover to charities chosen by me. I am fascinated by PayItForward system and think it is something super! Every now and then someone does something unexpected beautiful for me and I want to give this back. This time I do this by giving 1 percent of my gross turnover to a good cause, namely the Food Bank. In the first quarter, 1 percent goes to the Food Bank.

Food Bank

The Food Bank is really a PayItForward to me. It was a charity far from my bed show until February 2017. By living anti-squat I ended up without a home after six months and a small debt of about 2500 euros. Due to illness it was also quiet around the income.

At the end of February I pick up work again and I found a house in Eindhoven. I don’t like debt and want to get rid of it as soon as possible. So made a deal with the debt collection company. This means that I will be off debt within six months, but have no room for groceries besides fixed costs and debt. As a result, I end up at the Food Bank and I could pick up groceries there once a week.

Pick up groceries at the Food Bank

It is very nice that it is possible. I got more than enough groceries to buy almost nothing. So saved a lot per week. The groceries are super, it consists of everything. Lots of eggs, bread and vegetables. But there is also toothpaste, coffee, tea, butter and sweets in the package. And once in a while you can get extra meat. I never did that, but it was possible.

The walk to the Food Bank

I must say that I was ashamed that I used the Food Bank and hardly told anyone. Every Friday morning at 10am I stood in line with the same people waiting to fill my bags with groceries. More groceries than I would buy per week or buy now per week.

Farewell Food Bank

In October 2017, I was able to say goodbye to the Food Bank by paying off my debt and being rich in assignments again. I was grateful to them, but also happy that I could now get my groceries myself again. I was only dependent on it for six months, but many people longer. So that’s why I transfer 1 percent of my gross turnover from January 1 to March 31, 2020 to the Food Bank. It is a small contribution compared to their other donations, but I also support them in their good work.

Learned from the Food Bank

The walk to the Food Bank was a lesson in humility, gratitude and vulnerability:

  • Humility, because you get so much and don’t have to do anything for it.
  • Gratitude I was able to pay off my debt very quickly.
  • And vulnerability, because no matter how big your buffer is, with some major setbacks and illness you can get through it and then….

Databeet story

Databeet story

The Databeet story begins on August 13, 2012, on the day of the left-handers. I myself am left-handed, which gives this day extra meaning. Before this date I came up with a name and had a logo made. Oh and I already had my first assignment!

Origin name Databeet

The name Databeet in a pun on Alphabete and good with data. The idea came to me during a yoga class. We were in a resting position at the end of the lesson when the name once came in as a thought. You understand I ran home after class and wrote down the Name.

Happy with name

I certainly don’t regret the name because at first it covered everything I did. Even now I am happy with it, despite the fact that my activities have expanded beyond the scope of the name Databeet. I will continue to use the name Databeet as the company name.

Intro video

Because I would work with video a lot in the future, I had video intro designed. I had an idea and was looking for a professional to work it out for me. The results are impressive. The intro tells the Databeet story. Meanwhile I use this recognizable in all my video expressions at the beginning and end. I am very happy with it as with my logo.

Logo Databeet

When I got my name I had no idea how to design what I thought of as a logo myself. I went looking for a designer and came up with a very specific idea, but luckily she understood me and the logo was done. My logo also tells the Databeet story.

Colors Databeet

Databeet’s first colors were green, gray and white. These combine well with each other. Later an orange was added that I sometimes use in expressions when I need a fourth color.

So now you know how my company got its name. I am curious about the story behind your company name.

Ubud, Hiking through the rice fields

Ubud, hike through the rice fields

Back in 2014 I was fierless and went on a Hike through the rice fields of Ubud. Ubud is a very busy city, with lots of tourist. Also it is the centre of religious Bali and art community. Back then it was also the place to be for digital nomads.

Busy Ubud

But I was looking for rest and quietness. That is when I discovered that there was a hiking track surrounding Ubud. You start at the end of Ubud and hike through the rice fields and the art villages. Each villages had its own speciality in art.

The hike

It was a great walk. I loved the views and the art I saw on the way. The path is not marked well so be aware of where you have to go. Have a coco in the fields and a talk with the locals.

Travel stories inspiration

Inspiration

I follow a Travel Stories course on Instagram. There we were asked who inspire you with their writing about travel. I had to think about it, because I immediately thought of books, but I read more about being an entrepreneur than about traveling when it comes to books. Until I figured out blogs are also stories and so slowly came to the surface who inspired me.

Claudia from My adventures across the world

My adventures across the world by Claudia. Claudia inspires me by daring to take the step from academic lawyer to blogger. She calls herself an unsuccessful backpacker, but has become a successful travel blogger in the space of a few years. In 2013 I met her in Cuba not happy with her life at the time and it clicked and we kept in touch and about a year later we both opted for change and she was a travel blogger. Claudia describes extensively the locations she visits in her travels and of course also Sardinia, her island.

Suzanne of Free girl (Vrije meid)

Another blogger who inspires me is Suzanne from Vrije meid. She also left a law career to have more freedom to travel. She inspires in a different way because she strives for a career besides traveling.

Esther from Esther Jacobs

Then I realized that I have a ‘travel writer’ that inspires me, namely Esther. The theme of freedom is also very important to her. She inspires because I recognize the action in her.

Wonderful Work (Wonderlijk werken)

A newsletter that is about freedom, but then in doing what you want yourself is from Wonderlijk werken. They always surprise with their perspectives on a subject. That is why I look forward and I am very happy with mail from Diana and Steven from Wonderlijk Werken.

Kitty from The Blog Academy (De blogacademie)

I’ve heard that you should always choose an odd number in your blogs so one more. Kitty’s blog academy. No, no she is not so fond of traveling and is now concerned with the climate. What appeals to me is her willfulness and how she loses herself in a good way. She wants to know all about it and shares it with everyone until she gets tired of a subject.

There are probably more that inspire me, but these are the most important. I love reading these five and I’m a little jealous of their writing style.

I wrote this blog for the assignment who inspire you with their Travel Stories from the Instagram Travel Stories writing course. It is a series of three assignments. You can read the other 2 assignments here: Assignment 2 describe your environment and 3 describe a violent or special moment in your journey.

Nerves for my trip

Nerves for my trip

In February 2013, I board the plane for a three-week solo tour of Cuba. I am more nervous than usual. Since the fatal journey in 2010 with the Trans Siberia Express (by train from Moscow to Beijing) I have not made long journeys alone.

The flight

I watch a movie and talk to my neighbor on the plane. The conversation makes me even more nervous, because she is going to stay in a resort and does not dare to travel alone in Cuba. Just what I’m going to do! I used to have no problem with it, but the one trip that went wrong still plays through my mind. I sleep a bit and think I have already bought all guesthouses and buses so the route is fixed so it can’t be that difficult.

Cuba

We land in the middle of the night, my transfer to Havana is ready. After an hour’s drive I arrive at a super nice hotel in one of the old historical building. I check in and get ready to go to sleep. I shift the time to local time and fall asleep.

Havana

The next day I wake up early and have an extensive breakfast. I get into conversation with a Dutch couple who have just traveled through Cuba for three weeks by car. I get some tips and check my clock. It’s time to meet my local agent to receive my hotel and transfer vouchers.

Something goes wrong

I take a seat downstairs in the salon. A little later, a woman approaches me, the agent. She says I’m late. I made a mistake in the clock setting and now she has to go to another appointment first. Oh well something is already going wrong! Breathe in and out!

It will be fine

I can go with her to the other two hotels she has to go to and while she is talking to them I can explore the area and afterwards she will give me my vouchers and explain some little things to me. Great deal, I come along and explore a part of Havana where I probably wouldn’t have been otherwise. At the end of the afternoon I am dropped off at my hotel with my vouchers and some tips by the agent. The next day I explore Havana a bit more. And then the adventure really starts, because then I will take the bus through Cuba to the other end of the island.

The rest of the trip

The transfers are going well and the guesthouses are cool and I get in touch with locals everywhere. My confidence is growing again. When on the bus from Santiago to Baracoa a tire blows on the way, we all have to get off. I get into conversation with 2 Italian sisters who have just started their journey. I meet with them to have a cocktail after dinner. It results in 3 dinners and a friendship with one of the sisters.

Baracoa

We are not only talking about Cuba, but also about life. We review that we have few vacation days to see everything we want to see in the world. This is the place that is starting a change for me and one of the sisters, because at the end of 2013 we both quit our jobs and went on a journey.  We have a correspondence blog for 6 months together, parts of which can still be read on my website, she from South America and I from Oceania. We did not know all this at the time in Baracoa during the dinners and cocktails.

New adventure with confidence

Back on the plane, I was able to look back with satisfaction on a beautiful journey. My fatal trip in 2010 where I ended up in a local hospital in Mongolia and psychosis was diagnosed no longer arouses fear of traveling. There is even talk of my travel addiction again. On November 18, 2013 I left for Australia as a digital nomad, with new adventures in mind.

I wrote this blog for the assignment, describe a fiercely or special moment in your travels for the Instagram course Writing Travel Stories. It is a series of three assignments. The 2 other assignments can be read here: Assignment 1 who inspire you with travel stories and assignment 2 describe your environment.

Just back

Just back

It is the end of 2017 after almost 7 years I set foot on my birth island Curaçao, I am back. Everything and nothing has changed. My mother still lives in the house where I spent the last part of my teens before I went to college.

Dogs

We arrive in the garage by car. The dog kennels are still there, but the dogs from my childhood are no longer there. Others who greet me enthusiastically even though they don’t know me.

Swimming pool

I walk in through the porch into the house. Through the large window in the living room I see the pool where I swam many laps and when my father was alive a lot of BBQ was done by him.

The garden

The next day I make a round in the garden. All fruit trees are still there. The mango tree has fruits. I pick one, wash it and start eating. This brings me back to my childhood in which squashes (Spanish apple), sorsaka, pomegranate, cashew, apple dam, mango, etc from the garden end up in your mouth. Well, even a balcony or garden with strawberries and tomatoes cannot beat that in the Netherlands.

This blog was written as an assignment for the travel stories course I took on Instagram. The question was describe your living environment / residence. It is a series of three assignments. You can read the 2 other assignments here: Assignment 1 who inspire you with their travel stories and 3 describe a fiercely or special moment in your travels.

Dealing better with money

Since I work for myself I earn less, but it seems like I can do more. Not only do I have more time for fun things, there is also money for it.

Earn less and do more

I started to work more and more with the profit first idea. I already appeared to do it in part without knowing the term. I started making a budget for my company. At the time I knew what I had to earn to cover my fixed costs for Databeet. By also making a budget for private and including it in the Databeet budget, I had an idea what my fixed costs are for both private and Databeet and how much I have to earn.

Put aside

I didn’t leave it at that. I also started saving how small the amount was at the start of my career as an entrepreneur. That is why I built a buffer for myself and my company, Databeet.

Paying yourself

After reading Profit First I also started paying myself a salary. I did not leave it at that I started a savings account for each type of cost I had. Every invoice that I sent and was paid, I divided the invoice amount among the various saving accounts according to a fixed percentage per cost category. So I made one regular business account, 1 private account and 7 savings accounts. The 7 savings accounts I gave the following names:

  • Study: From this account I pay all the studies I want to do.
  • Marketing: With this I pay all the marketing stuff for my company.
  • VAT and Taxes: This account pays all my VAT and taxes
  • Travel costs: I sometimes travel for business. This is paid by this account.
  • Crowdfunding: With opening this account I am trying to work on my retirement money. I invest in crowfunding and bonds to make more money.
  • Profit: This account is my profit account. I am building a buffer with this account. So my company can survive difficult times and also buy special things.
  • Fixed charges: All the (fixed) cost of my company are paid from this.
  • And the Account named Guiselaine is my private account. The money in this account is to use on my private costs and savings.

As you can see in the picture each cost has a fixed percent of the invoice I earn going to it. I tried this for a year. I liked it and changed the fixed percentages till I found the right one for me. And when I noticed this was working I wanted to do this also for my private account.

Cost savings accounts for Business

Private Account

So now I am the proud owner of several private accounts, so that I also have a better grip on my money there. The accounts I made for the different costs look like this:

  • Fixed charges: Cost like rent, municipal taxes, water, electricity and heat, etc are paid from this account.
  • Savings: On this account I save to have a buffer and also special things I want.
  • Groceries: With this account I pay the groceries.
  • Travel: Yes I love to travel so I make sure an fixed amount is going to this to me important item.
  • Clothes: Yes, I need some clothes during the year so I make sure I have to money for it when needed by having a account for it.
  • House & Balcony: The house needs stuff like plants or when things break. With a separate account for this I know that when I need the money for it, it will be there.

In the table below you see how I a located the percentages. This works for me, for you it might be slightly different.

Private account

With doing this I am a proud owner of retirement money, a buffer and money to dedicate to my costs. I know what I have and what I spent. And I think I spent it smart.

If you whant to do this too. You can download the Excel Sheet I made especially for this. There is an English and a Dutch version!

Try it for yourself and be happy!

Using the Excel

Excel sheet for dividing money

As you can see I made an example for you in the picture above. If I earned 100 euros with my invoice I fill it in the yellow box below earnings and Excel divides the money for me to the different accounts with the fixed percentages I decided before.

The only thing left for me to do is transfer the money from my regular account to the different accounts. I do this with each invoice that is paid to me. You can also do this once a month if that suits you better.

In the second part of the picture you can see how the money is divided on my private account to my private costs and savings.

Have fun using this Excel template. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. In the mean while you can also read other blogs about Excel or use other Templates made in Excel. If you want to acquire more knowledge in Excel see this page for the courses Excel I give.

Leaving 2019 behind and starting 2020

2019 was over before I could blink. I hope 2020 last longer. What happend in 2019? And what am I looking forward to in 2020?

Winning 5.000 euro for Stichting Verloren Jaren

I am on the board of NGO Verloren Jaren (Lost Years). With this NGO we won 5.000 euro for the things we are doing with peersupport and working on combatting Stigma.

From 3 websites to 1 website

I had 3 website for each thing I did , but found it a hassle. So now back to one website with everything on it what I do, my blog and interviews with interesting people. You can find it on wanderingguiselaine.

Interviews with interesting people

This year I talked with a few interesting people about what they do and how they want to change the world. You can find these interviews on https://wanderingguiselaine.nl/interviews/ .

Wandelen naar Jezelf

Wandelen naar Jezelf means walking to yourself. It means getting to know yourself better by doing workshops and hikes. Last year we organized a midweek on Ameland and this year on Terschelling. The group particpated in workshops about getting to know what you want and we made 3 hikes in which we had one on one conversations about what the participants wanted with their lives, working on dreams. I organized this together with Herstelreizen.

Hiking the Pieterpad

In Spring 2019 I started hiking Pieterpad. I am on 1/4 of the route. Because of dead of my grandmother and moving I couldn’t hike more. I hope to finish the route in 2020.

4 Days Marbella Hike

In the fall I went to Marbella to hike for four days around there. It was nice to do. I walked places I would see on a normal vacation to Marbella. A look if that part of Spain is a place is I would like to setup my tiny house with a garden. No it is not THE Place, but I will keep doing other 4 Days walk of 20K in Southern Europe to find the perfect spot for my Tiny house with garden.

WordPress Conference in Berlin

At the beginning of the summer I went to Berlin for a WordPress conference. There I got to know more about the future of WordPress, blogging and SEO. It was a nice trip and I got to see a bit more of Berlin. It was my third visit to the city.

Christmas Market

Seeing a Christmas market in Germany was on my to do list. So I went to Koln in November, but it was one day too early for the Christmas market. So I have to go to another city in Germany again next year to experience the German Christmas market.

Night of the refugee

At the beginning of the summer I walked 40k through the night from Rotterdam to Den Haag for the NGO refugees. It was hard, but a nice experience. This year I will walk again 40K but then from Utrecht to Amersfoort if possible. You can support the cause.

What will 2020 bring

Next year I want:

  • To have a higher revenue. I hope to earn with my blog, writing articles, selling books, investing in crowdfunding and bonds and online courses as passive income.
  • Also I want to read 52 books 2020. I have a list of more than 300 books I want to read.
  • I would love to go on 1 workation in 2020. Last year I went on workation to Berlin and Curacao.
  • It would be fun if I could also develop furtther earning from hiking workation/vacations.
  •  Not work related wishes for 2020 are: I would love to loose 20KG, play tennis again, make a few travels and put more money a side.

40 km once but never again or again?

In 2009 I walked the Vierdaagse van Nijmegen (The Walk of the World), 4 days 40 km every day. Afterwards I said 40 km is too far and too tiring, never again. I stayed with this thought till the beginning of 2019. In the meantime I did a lot of walking, even the Camino de Santiago in 2016. I tapped the 35 km a number of times there, but remained below 40 km each day.

Night of the refugees

Night of the Refugee

A few years ago I saw the night of the refugee passing by and I thought I would like to participate. I forgot about it until this year. Someone I knew registered. I asked her about it and she said walk with us. I registered and thought I am walking 40 km again?!

40 km

In 2009 I was 25 kg lighter and in shape. I played tennis at least twice a week on average and I walked long distance once a week. Yet I found the 4x 40 km in 2009 very tough.

Well then what?

I said Yes to walking and the first sponsor money came in. And I occasionally walked the Pieterpad, on average 20 km each time. There were now 5 kg off again and I also made sure that the counter came to 6 km every day.

Oh, I’m going for it

The date was approaching. The weather was bad beforehand. The person with whom I would walk canceled a few days before. Yet I decided to go for it. It is a short walk compared to what the refugees walk to get to safety.

The night

On the day itself I tried to get some sleep in the afternoon. It didn’t work except for a 1-hour nap. I did rest though. I am not a night person so how am I going to keep going through the night? I took another bottle of cola and a banana.

Skyline Rotterdam

And then it was time!

It was a nice trip. It was very nice to walk at night and very different from walking during the day. I was entertained with beautiful skies and the sound of frogs and of course the skyline of Rotterdam. What was also very beautiful was the walking to the day. The predicted rain did not come and the pains stayed away too. I walked with breaks included from 0:00 to 10:30 the next day. I was a bit stiff, but it went well. I thought 40 km is a bit too far again.

The route

One day later

It was a super experience. Nice experience and route. And a goal that I support. Slowly the thought came to join again next year, because it is a beautiful goal and a spicy but beautiful challenge for your body. So next year I will walk one of the 3 other routes and hopefully then again 20 kg lighter.

Thank you this years sponsors!

The finish

Are you sponsoring next year?
